Scrutiny of Russia Investigation Is Said to Be a Review, Not a Criminal Inquiry

The federal prosecutor tapped to scrutinize the origins of the Russia investigation is conducting only a review for now and has not opened any criminal inquiry, a person familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

The distinction means that Mr. Durham for now will not wield the sort of law enforcement powers that come with an open criminal investigation, such as the ability to subpoena documents and compel witnesses to testify.

snip

But later on Tuesday, told by a Times reporter that Mr. Durham was for now conducting only a review, [Senator Lindsey] Graham said, “That is completely different.” He said he wanted the inquiry to be run by a prosecutor with the same power as Robert S. Mueller III

In late July 2016, the Australian government told the United States Embassy in London that George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign adviser, had told an Australian diplomat that Russia had damaging information about Hillary Clinton in the form of stolen emails before WikiLeaks published them. It remains unclear if Ms. Haspel was aware at the time of the information the Australians had provided to the United States.

That information partly formed the basis for opening the Russia investigation. F.B.I. agents traveled the following month to London to interview the diplomat and then mounted an operation targeting Mr. Papadopoulos and several other Trump campaign aides with personal ties to Russia.

snip

Mr. Rosenstein also asked John W. Huber, an Obama administration holdover ... to look at the FISA issues, along with several other politically charged matters. But it is not clear that Mr. Huber has done much on the issue yet...Mr. Durham will now take over the FISA review assignment from Mr. Huber

So now the newest version of the narrative from the FBI/NYT is that Papadop only "partly" formed the basis of starting the FBI investigation.

Also, we now are told that the FBI traveled to London to "mount an operation" against "several other" Trump people.

At some point if anyone does get put under oath we will likely learn the FBI investigation was really started at the behest of Hillary/Fusion GPS's operative Christopher Steele and the name "Crossfire Hurricane" was indeed from the Whoopie Goldberg movie Jumpin Jack Flash about a British spy outwitting Russian agents with the Rolling Stones theme song.

Per the article, Barr is huddling with Christopher Wray, Gina Haspel and Dan Coats to get to the bottom of this.

And for those of you still holding your breath for Huber - keep holding on! Don't let up now!

This article is propaganda from a deep state person trying to calm the fears of Trump haters. You don’t hire a us attorney for a review and the fact that Comey, Rosenstein,Brennan and Clapper are starting to point fingers at each other tells you and then that the noose is getting tighter. I wouldn’t believe it at first but I’m confident that Somebody is joining to jail. Just don’t know how many

A review now, a review first, which makes sense.

It will depend on what the review will find, whether it will turn into more.

Joe Degenova says the Durham has empaneled a grand jury. The NYT is full of it.

It’s possible Durham used a grand jury only for the James Baker (former FBI general counsel) leak investigation months ago. Supposedly, Baker was cleared by Durham.

Interesting that the Slimes reports Durham is taking over the FISA violation inquiry from Huber.

Supposedly cleared?

Are those legal terms?

You sure those words aren't too big for you?

Scrutiny of Russia Investigation Is Said to Be a Review, Not a Criminal Inquiry

I am seeing a lot of FReepers in a frenzy over the nyt article saying there is an investigation. Now the nyt says it's only a review, in other words walking it back. I'm still the negative nelly saying all of this is just more of the same dog and pony show. We are headed for the usual fall back of "Mistakes were made, but nothing criminal". No one will be held accountable. barr is there to clean-up the mess that comey and rosenwiezel made, he is not going to prosecute anyone.

Rush talked about the Times take today. Grasping at straws trying to keep control of situation. I think unless some big behind the scenes prog, like Soros, takes control these guys will start ratting each other out. And I think Comey is almost there.

Shades of the Comey weasel-worded press conference on Hillary's bathroom server hack.

It wasn't an "Investigation", it was a "Matter", as I recall.

I guess the "I" word means there was wrongdoing, something illegal that someone should be punished for. Better to call it a "matter" or a "review" or "fact-finding".

That "I" word's so ugly, like we're talking about criminals or something.

I’m with you.

I think they (Wray, Haspel, Coats, Durham) are trying to figure out what is the minimum needed to somewhat placate the deplorables.

I think they have zero appetite to prosecute FBI agents or CIA officers. I think they have even less than zero appetite to try to go after MI6 or GCHQ.

I think they think that the removal from position at the FBI is punishment enough.

Maybe they will prosecute a couple of people for leaking. The earlier Horowitz report described practically a combined MSM/FBI borg, but yet no one has been convicted of leaking.

They know that we know that Huber was a head fake. They know they need to do better than that, and they’re trying to figure out how to sell it better to the public.

People in fear of criminal prosecution lawyer up and say nothing. Instead, they are running their mouths without a care in the world knowing Spygate is now a political “matter” for 2020. The GOP will never allow their Democrats friends to be prosecuted to the benefit of Donald J. Trump. Sorry.

DiGenova is second only to Hannity in the all hat and no cattle department. The proof is in the pudding. Nearly 3 years after their crimes Democrats are guilty as sin, free as birds.

Spot on. And I think the Barr tough guy persona is part of it. It’s all about 2020 now. The GOP doesn’t support POTUS and he needs to keep that fact under wraps. Nothing wil cuase the beltway GOP to run faster than criminal prosecution of their Democrat friends. If the truth of that is known GOP base voter morale will collapse and the Dems will win.

“yet no one has been convicted of leaking.”

James Wolfe, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence staffer, who leaked Carter page’s identity to the press, was convicted of lying to the FBI about his contacts with reporters, where he released non-classified info (not actually convicted of leaking, because that is only a crime if it was classified info). Interestingly, his wife, Jane Rhodes Wolfe had been a member of the Senior Executive Service in the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division from 2012 to 2014.

Also interestingly, his case produced a mountain of evidence for investigators to pore over. Breaking with past practice, the Government executed broad search warrants seizing all the electronic communications of reporters, going back for years.

They definitely got Ali Watkins at the NY Times, and likely Manu Raju at CNN, Marianna Sotomayor at NBC, and Brian Ross at ABC.

Wolfe cut a plea deal and was sentenced last December. He certainly was in a position to know where bodies might have been buried (figuratively speaking) when it came to leaking. Possibly with Senator Feinstein, who was on that committee.

Laura Ingraham said to Sol Wisenberg & Guiliani today that she’s heard from someone in the White House that President Trump will be releasing all the docs next week. Wisenberg said, “to the AG”. Laura seemed to think public will get to read them. Wisenberg said he’ll believe it when it happens.

fingers cross.
