“The constitution does not have ‘so help me God’ in the oath. It appears that for whatever reason, Washington added it when he took the oath.”

The mystery of such acts is easily resolved by the understanding that neither the Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence were ever intended to create the laws of our nation from scratch (though they did form the basis for doing so going forward). Like all nations that proceeded it, America began with the solid foundations of both natural law and common law.

The Constitution specifies a power to Congress to “define and punish... offenses against the Law of Nations”. This is a reference to the Principles of Natural Law.

Though the modern legal profession has essentially changed the meaning of the term “common law”, the founders had a very particular way of looking at it. Here is a quote from Charles E. Carpenter in Columbia Law Review I lifted from wikipedia: “From the earliest times through the late 19th century, the dominant theory was that the common law was a pre-existent law or system of rules, a social standard of justice that existed in the habits, customs, and thoughts of the people.”

So, it was understood that an oath of affirmation meant solemnly swearing and concluding the affirmed statement with “so help me God.” Provisions can be found historically for exceptions made for those who believed they should not take oaths, such as the Quakers.

So, the Democrats are openly hostile to God, wishing to invent new traditions that support their delusions. It is very clear how they would govern if given unchecked power: they would be the worst sorts of despots and tyrants—no different than the many that have gone before them.

They make sweeping changes on a whim that impact people’s lives in dramatic ways, but they assert that their actions are the moral and right thing to do, and if there are unintended consequences they can just fix those with another wave of the hand. In other words, we no longer have the rule of law but the rule of tyrants. I can think of no better example of this than the imposition of “gay marriage” and “transgender rights”. In their warped view of reality it is perfectly ok to punish people for what they perceive is wrong thinking: in other words, thought crimes.

Such twisted beliefs are naturally alienated from traditional beliefs regarding family, faith, and morality. While it is obvious to anyone that exposing children to such depraved practices (by granting parental rights to people who should have them taken upon discovery of such perversions), to them children need to be “protected” from religious views of Christianity (but it is apparently ok to indoctrinate them with other religious views found in Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Wicca, and Satanism.)

The Democrats spurious and careless trifling with law, tradition, and common morality underpins a pattern of destroying and dismantling our nation through another law: the one of unintended consequences. In a similar way as this present claim, there is also no law that makes English our nation’s official language. And who is in charge of determining the rules of the English language anyway? Should there be a federal agency for this? (I probably shouldn’t give the Democrats such crazy ideas, as they might actually take this seriously.) Suppose that tomorrow the Democrats decided that all business going forward would be conducted in the Klingon language because doing otherwise is outdated and divisive. Or suppose they decided that calling Sunday by its given name was a carryover of sun worship and an unlawful or unreasonable blending of church and state.

Bottom line: the Democrats are forcing their insanity upon our society and, in the process, doing incredible destruction and damage to our institutions.

Oaths were taken well before the Declaration of Independence and Constitution within the colonies. So help me God has never been mandatory.
