Trump's China Tariffs Will Succeed

These countries accounted for 93% of the total, with China, by itself, accounting for 61% of the U.S. trade deficit. Donald Trump was elected by the people who have borne the brunt of this policy failure, with a mandate to fix it.

On Friday, President Donald Trump took a huge step toward doing just that. He raised the U.S. tariff rate from 10% to 25% on $200 billion per year worth of Chinese goods that were being imported into the United States. Back in July, when Trump had initially imposed the 10% tariffs on Chinese imports, China responded by imposing tariffs on $110 billion of U.S. exports to China.

Trump also threatened to place tariffs on the other Chinese goods being imported each year into the United States. This gives the U.S. leverage that China can’t match. As a result of its mercantilist strategy, China exported $540 billion worth of goods to the U.S. but only let $121 billion worth of U.S. goods into China in 2018. (Mercantilism is the “beggar-thy-neighbor” economic strategy of maximizing exports and minimizing imports in order to grow at one’s trading partners’ expense.

China has been engaged in economic warfare against the U.S. for decades. China leverages all available means to achieve its mercantilist ends -- from manipulation of its currency, to tariffs, to non-tariff barriers, to forced technology transfer, to outright stealing of technology.

The negative consequences of China’s trade policies have hit many parts of the United States and many regions of the U.S. economy. Innovation, marriage, health, and welfare suffered as a result of what economists term the China shock.

I’m so tired of the sky-is-falling experts who say the new tariffs will destroy our economy. Bull crap. We may have to suck it up for a while, but in the long run, this is a really smart move for the US. The Snowflakes living in their parents’ basements and think Socialism is the answer are just as stupid as AOC when it comes to economics. How could anyone who is an econ major say: “The reason the unemployment rate is low is because most Americans have two jobs.” Come on, MSM, if you want some better economic interviews, just look for a bag of hammers.

Was watching Fox last night. A commercial came on with individuals crying about tariffs raising prices. Since it was a commercial, I was only half paying attention. But the continued use of the word “tariff” perked me up. The commercial was put out by some car manufacturer’s association.

I guess they enjoy being raped by China.

Thanks for posting
Imagine if we had a fair responsible news establishment that shared facts with and educated the public on this issue?

China and most of our other trading partners need us a lot more than we need them. The bottom line is that China's economy is based almost entirely on producing cheap, low-quality materials for consumption by Americans and other affluent Western countries. We in turn depend on them for nothing except substitution of their cheaper, lower-quality goods for slightly more expensive, higher-quality US equivalents.

This means that the US will easily win any trade war with China. They simply have much more to lose than we do.

Yep and if we get into a shooting war with China we need to take care of them.

China has been eating our lunch thanks to failed Presidents. It’s overdue to address this seriously as Trump is doing.

“In other words, Trump’s future step could be the scaled tariff we first proposed nearly a decade ago in which the rate is scaled so as to take in half of our bilateral trade deficit as tariff revenue.”

This is key in the future to keep the balance of trade deficit getting out of line with China’s manipulation. A simple objective measure that works like an accordian. If the deficit gets to out of line tariffs automatically increase to temper the trade imbalance. The more China buys from us to avoid tariffs ratcheting up the more balanced the trade stays and China avoids increasing tariff on their goods.Nothing like a gun on autopilot held to your head to make you behave

You know, even in Wal*Mart, products made in the USA are available. It may take a little browsing around to examine the options, but American made products are available. When I need to buy storage tubs, I look for the Sterlite brand, which is usually made domestically.

Now some items, like computer parts, may be harder or impossible to buy from USA companies. Cars may have a mixture of domestic and foreign parts content and even the location of manufacture can be in the USA or elsewhere.
