Road Trip: Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia

nasoceana3

Naval Air Station Oceana or NAS Oceana is a military airport located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is a United States Navy master jet base. It is also known as Apollo Soucek Field, named after Lieutenant (later Admiral) Apollo Soucek, a Navy Test Pilot who set the global altitude record in 1930 by flying a Curtiss "Hawk" biplane to an altitude of 43,166 feet. NAS Oceana is the only Master Jet Base on the East Coast.

Home to seventeen strike fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 Super Hornets, the base is the sole East Coast Master Jet Base and home to all the east coast strike-fighter (VFA) units (excluding VFA-86 and Marine Corps VMFA squadrons). Training is conducted by VFA-106 Gladiators in their F/A-18A-D Hornets and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.

The station is located on 5,916 acres, has 250 total aircraft and has buildings valued at $823 million in plant replacement value. The total Navy community, including spouses, numbers approximately 20,000 people. NAS Oceana is the largest employer in Virginia Beach.

Additionally, NAS Oceana became home to the F/A-18 Hornet in 1999 following the Navy's closure of NAS Cecil Field, Florida as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.

Aside from its military function, NAS Oceana was an alternative landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle until the program ended in 2011.

Finding the newspaper was what I needed ..... motivation. LOL! Going through so much junk has gotten VERY old and it’s hard to make myself keep going after a while. This was a very cool find and you better believe I’m going to do my best to make it presentable so it can go to the museum. I’ve seen several newspapers with articles about WWII but I don’t recall seeing any about WWI.

It was comfortable earlier but now it’s chilly over there. And it’s cold outside. It’s 46 degrees and we aren’t anywhere near sunrise. Gonna be a real nippy start to the morning. brrrrr!

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Was it another crowded day at the lake or did you two have more freedom to roam? Gizmo’s probably getting tired of being leashed so much. A pooch has gotta run! LOL

Hey Radu. Sorry for the delayed response.

Thankfully it wasn't as crowded at Chisolm Trail Park as it was Sunday at Comanche Lake. We had the picnic tables to ourselves as well as the grassy area west of the boat ramp. Gizmo did do a little running but not much.

We had fun yesterday and look forward to more outside activity later today.

I used to fly into “Ocean Bananas” quite often, especially to hit the O’Club on Friday nights. On a related note my grandfather’s log book from the ‘30s shows he flew with Lt. Soucek several times as an enlisted aircrewman.
