Actually, from the tradition I was raised in, having sex with someone makes you “one in the flesh” and one is permanently married, just by the act. The ceremony and oaths are just window dressing, and the license is just an act of Caesar.

Now cutting off one’s spouse, for political purposes is another issue entirely.
