The proposal would raise the annual registration fee to $1,000, more than 57 times the current amount of $17.50.
Illinois officials believe the legislation will raise $2.4 billion for future projects, the major one being roadway improvement, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The bill would also make things more expensive for residents who drive non-electric cars. The state's gas tax would go up 19 cents to 44 cents a gallon, fees for drivers licenses would double and the registration fee for non-electric vehicles would go up nearly 50% from $98 to $148.
Its outrageous, Tesla owner Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, told the Chicago Tribune. I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV (electric vehicle) ownership.
The reason for the extreme hikes are that electric vehicles don't provide the state any gas tax revenue. Electric vehicle companies Tesla and Rivian say they're against the legislation.

The lesson to be learned:
In the end, property owners must make up the shortfall.
The smart people have already gotten out (700,000+ in IL). This is also applicable to CA, NY, NJ
If it went to cover future pension payouts, thatd be a good thing. But it wont. It will end up in politicians pockets.
The very essence of liberalism/progressivism/socialism.
LIE to the voters to get elected and then thrust a shive in their back and tell them you're helping them.
Just another example of the phony climate change BS.
All the liberals want is your money.
Keep voting for them Nicoletta and you'll keep getting the shaft.
If they had just taxed Coal.
Then they could not afford to eliminate it.
Illinois officials believe the legislation will raise $2.4 billion for future projects..
Whenever I read a prediction such as this I know the official is either ignorant or lying (or both)
The old saying reward what you want more of, punish (or in this case tax) what you want less of.
I can gurantee you the state will never see this much money from the new legislation.
(Of course that does not mean they will not spend it before they receive it and go further into debt)
They use the roads but dont pay for them through the gas tax. I have always said electric car owners should pay an annual fee like a gas tax.
You go green ,we get mean.
Great time to open a used electric car lot.
But they’re raising the gas tax, too. If you switch back to gasoline power you’ll still pay, more than you would now.
I think people who drive electric cars should ask themselves just where the electricity that powers their cars comes from. NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS for the most part. Then they should look in the mirror. At the hypocrisy staring back. But they are too busy “advising” others and protesting ANYONE with an “R” beside their name as haters to take the time for self evaluation. Of course I’m not talking about ALL electric car aficionados. Just the ones I’ve met.
LOL
[Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, told the Chicago Tribune. I thought Illinois was progressive]
It IS progressive, you moron.
This is what they do. Enjoy!!!
LOL swiping
Rivian has a truck and an SUV both of which do 0-60 in 3 seconds with a claimed range of 400 miles plus a water clearance of 3 feet (under-body skid protected). 750hp, cargo weight 1750 lb, towing 7,700 lb. $72,500 before taxes etc
[Democrat voters = useful idiots]
They. Just. Don’t. Ever. Learn.
Ever.
Here are the numbers.... 94,000 making over $100k for life!
I just drove through New York. Their roads are horrendous. I was pulling a three month old 16 foot utility trailer. I broke a leaf spring and a weld broke on the spare tire mount.
.. electric vehicles don’t provide the state any gas tax revenue.
Ouch!!
they do collect a fee on recharging at recharge stations, don’t they? but that probably goes to support renewables/alternative sources and such.
Oh vell.
This is only the beginning. Climate change will cost consumers lots of green.
Nicky, you dumb Dhimmi. How does it feel to be bent over by your “Progressive” Daddy? Just lay back and enjoy it, babe. #What,MeToo?
