Without ‘cash’, there will be nothing ‘common’. We, as a society, must have a conveyable common asset that is acceptable for ALL commerce (CASH).
Otherwise, a retailer could easily change payment requirements daily. Perhaps cash one day and used tires the next.

So what if some crazy retailer wants to change payment requirements daily and run off all of his customers? Isn’t that the retailer’s decision? No one is making you shop there.
Also, what if Ocasio Cortez gains power and institutes her print-and-spend economics and causes hyperinflation. If a business wants to accept only gold coins instead of wheelbarrows of cash, shouldn’t the business be able to do that as well?
So what?
The retailer could also discontinue the product-line you need - or discontinue only your preferred brand.
He could, e.g., stop selling 3-oz. candy bars, and sell only 10-lb. blocks of chocolate.
He could stop selling cartons of cigarettes, and sell tobacco only as shag, so you'd have to roll your own.
He could stop delivering groceries to your doorstep (a service the elderly or bedridden might really appreciate), and require that you actually come to his store to shop - or vice-versa.
He could, if he wished, completely close his doors on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Why do you think that the government should intercede in these cases?
