They were talking about school children. Maybe blame the grown ups for the problems.
Past and current corruption by puerto rico government having nothing to do with the present day difficulties.
Oh, pish-tosh. That was back in the dark ages of medical science, before psychologists invented ... er, I mean discovered... a host of new ailments they needed to exploit ... er, I mean cure.
Hadn’t been invented back then.
One look at the source (PBS) confirmed it was made up nonsense.
I’ve had PTSD due to my military service and a health scare. I’m over both now but can relate and see it out there on a daily basis, because the hurricane was extremely dangerous for most people up in the mountains and along the river basins. I’m talking catastrophic flooding of up to 60+ feet in some areas. An employee of mine and his whole family nearly drowned inside their home, and only because their dogs were drowning in the garage first, were they alerted and able to scramble up on the roof under 150+ MPH winds. His home was NOT in a flood zone area.
You try brushing that off.
And how is this different than any hurricane in the past? This PTSD nonsense is just a ploy to open up the government spending spigot on “counseling” and other benefits for these students and anyone close to them who can make their way to the spending trough.
This “PTSD” thingy has gotten out of control. While appliable to veterans of wars and maybe, severely abused women, what this study shows is “Life is Crappy’ meme.
I’ve never been in a war nor seen any family member dismembered but Id bet, by their standards, I have “ptsd”
Crappy situation? Check.
Depressed and feeling hopeless? Check.
Got nightmares? Check.
Panic Attacks?(sometimes) Check.
Yet I do not feel like I have “PTSD’ but get me on a head doctors couch and when I leave his office he will have me thinking I’m mad and load me up with antipsychotic meds that may drive me bonkers.
No thank you.
WE all should be diagnosed with fear of the rug being jerked out from under us. It is the human condition.
“And how is this different than any hurricane in the past?”
Without going into the merits of the study, this was no ordinary hurricane. And I’ve been through several, including two major ones.
That comes from sitting around waiting for government to do something instead of getting out and doing it for yourself. That mindset of the parents is absorbed by the kids.
Additionally, it appears no one commenting on this thread actually bothered to read the excerpt or my first comment. The highlight of this study is that Puerto Rican children showed LESS propensity towards PTSD after a major disaster than what is generally expected of populations on the mainland. LESS. And that apparently, this is due, among several things, to STRONG FAMILY TIES.
I thought any reasonable person would pick up on THAT!
I actually do have PTTSD (Post Teaching Traumatic Stress Disorder). These folks don’t have a clue.
LOL. I believe THAT!
I was a combat medic with Armor in RVN in 68-69. The only PTSD I ever suffered was by caused by bums crawling through and around my present neighborhood.
How many Holocaust Survivors complained of PTSD?
And compared to what they endured, Hurricane Maria was a walk in the park.
Obviously, the Holocaust was worse than Hurricane Maria.
But if you read the excerpt and my quote from the actual study, it found that island children suffered PTSD at LESSER rates than what is normally expected of Continental U.S. populations.
I suspect this is a play for money. If the kids are declared disabled they can get some benefit from Uncle Sugar. My sister taught on an Indian reservation in SD once and saw this. Some families wanted their kids to be declared learning disabled to cash in. I bet the same is true of the
deaths attributed to the hurricane. Uncle Sugar paid for funerals and gave a death benefit to families of those who died because of the hurricane. So what do you get? Deaths that would have occurred regardless become hurricane victims.
Sounds more like HOFC (Hands Out For Cash Syndrome)
Isnt that island one big welfare scam already ?
Im sure some libtards will latch onto it to be further ‘generous with the taxpayers money’...
I have PTSD from all the influx of PR’s.
