wenty students have committed suicide in India this past week after the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) announced their exam scores, which Khaleejtimes reported have been marked in controversy after there were discrepancies in the results.
Nearly 1 million students took the exams between February and March, and nearly 350,000 failed, causing widespread protests from parents, student groups and political parties.
One student named Sirisha was failing biology and set herself on fire at her home in the Narayanpet district on Saturday after her parents went out to the fields, according to Khaleejtimes.
On Thursday, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao ordered the recounting and re-verification for all the students who failed their exams, while urging the students to not commit suicide, adding that failing the tests didn't mean the end of their lives.
According to the parents, what caused students to commit suicide was an error on the part of the software solutions firm, Globarena Technologies Private Limited, which had been hired by Telagana BIE to develop software for processing admissions, pre-examination and post-examination results.

Annual tragedy in Korea, too.
So who do they call for tech support?
There was an article posted here a few years ago about the Mumbai passenger rail system. At the time, there were 10-12 passenger deaths on those trains PER DAY.
So now we get stories out of India where 0.005714% of a given population (the failing students) committed suicide.
Great. I see the next big failure has already started. They don’t have as far to fall.
At MIT, too.
I would have been dead years ago if cared that much about my grades. :0)
More than 150 Americans die every day from drug overdoses. And we’re supposed to care about 20 suicides in India because ... ?
In India, low performance is a badge of shame leading some kids to the ultimate form of sacrifice.
In America, in many locales and cultures, people are proud of low performance, ignorance, and not “acting white.” Suicide would never occur to them.
That is a stark contrast between our cultures.
“More than 150 Americans die every day from drug overdoses.”
That would be 150 suicides. Like drinking alcohol, taking drugs is a choice.

blame the faulty software that graded 1/3 of a million students as “failures”, not the Indian programmers who wrote the software...
But still they are people. It’s a real shame. But I understand some cultures please such a priority on academic achievement that it “kills” them when they fail.
We don’t appear to have that problem in the US. LOL
