A federal appeals court has denied Chelsea Manning’s request to overturn an order finding her in contempt for refusing to testifying before a grand jury.
The order, issued Monday, rejected Manning’s argument that a judge improperly denied her request to say whether she was illegally electronically surveilled after she was convicted in 2013 for leaking classified material to WikiLeaks.
“Upon consideration of the memorandum briefs filed on appeal and the record of proceedings in the district court, the court finds no error in the district court’s rulings and affirms its finding of civil contempt,” the order reads. “The court also denies appellant’s motion for release on bail.”
Manning had been held in contempt and has been in a federal prison since March, after she refused to testify before a grand jury in a WikiLeaks investigation. A federal judge has ordered her to remain incarcerated until Manning agrees to answer questions.
The order also comes shortly after the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Federal prosecutors in the U.S. allege in recently unsealed court filings that Assange sought to help Manning crack a password to a computer on a Defense Department network that contained classified materials.
The prosecutors have noted that it’s unclear if the password was ever hacked, and the charge against Assange is unrelated to WikiLeaks’ publication of classified materials.
Legal experts have pointed to Manning's current case as a sign that further charges could be filed against Assange, ahead of his extradition proceedings from the U.K. to the U.S.
Manning previously served seven years of her 35-year-long sentence for leaking the classified materials. Former President Obama commuted her sentence and she was released in 2017.

Bradley Manning is a male. You cannot change chromosomes. Sexual organ mutilation changes nothing but is a manifestation of psychotic break with reality and is a serious mental disorder.
The appeals court just doing what it can to see that he spends as much of that 35-year-sentence behind bars as possible . . . noBama notwithstanding.

This rejection of his appeal wouldn’t have happened during the Obama years.
He has a difficult time Manning up?
Now that the he/she issue has been addressed, it might be a good idea to realize this is ALL about Assange.
Manning was convicted of releasing classified documents to an uncleared journalist. Did 7 yrs of the sentence and the rest was commuted. Doesn’t really matter if you think more time should have been served. The time served was what the law required. This person paid the punishment.
It’s not about this person. It’s ALL about Assange. The deep state and GOPe want him nailed. There are a lot of people in government who were humiliated by the Cables’ release. They managed to stay in government and now they are after him.
They would be after him regardless of Podesta’s email array.
He did nothing different than newspaper reporters do everyday, nudging and pushing sources to get them information. He provided publicly available information on password cracking to Manning and because the deep staters in DoJ include some who were humiliated and do not dare walk too close to the journalism thing, the best they could do was a password thing.
Manning committed a crime. Served sentence. Assange is in fear of his life, and should be. Turn him loose. Let him get back to the job of publishing information humiliating to the deep state.
that is great!! funny. I have never seen man living so many lies. We live lies that women are strong as men. We live lies about Gender. racial IQs . We live lies about climate change. These are almost spiritual province. The human mind can only take so much damage from lies and then it just breaks down. We must anchor our minds on fact and real truth .
Can't quite agree with that, Manning was in the military and committed espionage and violated his oath. He is a traitor and was sentenced to 35 years, 0bama commuted all but 7 of those years. That's not quite the same as what newspaper reporters do every day.
