Live by the media hype, die by the media hype...for someone else. Such is the sad fate of poor Beto O'Rourke who just a few short weeks ago basked in the glow of mainstream media adulation. Unfortunately for the Irish guy with the Mexican nickname, the media has switched its attention to another shiny object in the form of Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, now "burning with the velocity of a prairie fire on a gusty Indiana day."
On Wednesday, Politico chronicled Beto's tragic loss of his magic mojo in "Why the Media Dumped Beto for Mayor Pete." Appropriately it was authored by Jack Shafer, who back in October begged the press to stop hyping Beto so vigorously in "Stop the Press Before It Profiles Beto O’Rourke Again."
Can one discern a bit of glee on Shafer's part as he reports on Beto's new has-been status?

Good analogy. Buttigieg knows he can’t get the nomination by the convention or win more than five or six primary states. I think he’s angling for 2024 to be picked up nationally. Beto should just settle to be governor of Texas, at best.
It appears that Eastern media liberals are trying and failing to gin up any enthusiasm for their favorites, no matter who they try to momentum-ignite for.
Nobody is really interested in any of these losers. Mayor of South Bend, Indiana? For President of the United States? Are they joking?

I think we’re going to need to be more careful than usual to avoid accidental innuendo, with this one.
It's an impossible quest. The more forcefully a politician expresses an ideological view the less likely they are to unify the country. But right now, Democrats and the media see Pete as a stronger, louder, more determined voice for their ideology and as somebody with wider appeal. Beto doesn't pack the ideological punch, but also doesn't look strong enough to unify anybody.
What Buttigieg is doing is similar to what Bill Clinton and Barack Obama did: capture the key demographic, but look more acceptable to Middle America.
In essence, Buttigieg is basically the “Morning Joe” candidate adored by highly-educated white liberals who have perfected the art of speaking for hours and “sounding smart” without saying anything of substance while making everyone who is taking part in the conversation feel “intelligent” at dinner parties and self-perpetuating conferences.
This is the top skill that is taught at America’s top colleges, graduate schools, and consulting companies populated by Americans from homogenous zip codes who went to similar high schools. And it is arguably the most important trait for getting the lazy and often dimwitted chattering class to take a candidate seriously. -- Breitbart
Beto can't do that.
I'm not saying that Buttiegieg really is more acceptable to Middle America or that he actually has widespread mainstream appeal, but he makes noises that the media interprets that way, as it interpreted the noises that Clinton, Obama, and Josiah Bartlett, the president Martin Sheen played on the West Wing made. He won't win the whole thing, but he's doing well in his lane.
