Imagine three Pittsburghs, simultaneously a multi-pronged murderous attack at Jewish institutions across the country.
The Jewish communitys top security arm did just that last week at an exercise joining community leaders from across the country with senior U.S. law enforcement officials.
Six months after the massacre of 11 Jewish worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue complex in Pittsburgh, several dozen officials met in a conference room overlooking the National Mall here and reviewed the lessons of that awful day as a means of dealing with future attacks.
The most surprising and poignant recommendations came from survivors of the Pittsburgh shooting for better or worse. They recalled practices that already were in place and probably saved lives, among them persuading otherwise Shabbat-observant rabbis to carry cellphones strictly for emergency use and urging people to flee a shooting rather than hide in place.
The tabletop exercise was organized by Secure Community Network, an arm of the Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency was invited to cover the session on condition that it not quote officials on the record describing details of security procedures.
The three-city scenario imagined a car-ramming and shooting attack on the Jewish Community Center in Memphis, including surveillance by a mysterious drone, and almost simultaneous shooting attacks on a Jewish student barbecue at the University of Michigan and a Boston-area synagogue.

Little Bill Daggett:
You just shot an unarmed man.
Bill Munny:
He should have armed himself.
Get a gun, Smile, defend yourself.
Tremendous resistance to such plans by most American Jews. Too big a reminder that Jews are but temporary guests anywhere outside of the Land of Israel. But even a small percent of a cross-section of American Jews being somewhat prepared will save many lives.
Pogroms in America are coming.
First one was in ‘91. None since. Pretty good record, relatively speaking.
A fantastic record, perhaps unequaled!
But permanent? I think not!
Local orthodox synagogue has had armed private security during the sabbath and holy days, really any time there are a lot of people there, for years.
Realists about the world.
I know of a man that does baptismal’s, swears glock’s are water proof, I am skeptical.
many Los Angeles synagogues have had tight security for some years - not just for obvious holidays, but for daily life, especially when a day school is on the property. fact of life for Jews.
Even a place like the Jewish Community Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, has had both noticeable and inconspicuous security for years.
So the name of my city is now synonymous with whackjob anti-Semite attacks. Swell.
didn’t that area have quite a few Somalis enlist as jihadis?
St. Paul is a different world than Minneapolis. I believe security was upgraded after 9/11, but certainly Somali jihadis are a concern because of their physical proximity.
Jews there are migrating to suburbs farther south anyway.

Many Synagogues in the US, the ones that can afford it, have had tight security for decades. I've read estimates from 10,000 to as many as 25,000 military and police to protect the Synagogues and other institutions of 500,000 Jews in France. It's potentially a very large and very expensive proposition. And no, while congregants should be able to be armed, that's not the same as the 24/7 security necessary in Europe. With Church vandalism and attacks running at a rate of 600-1000 per year in France, the Sunday people are next. Probably better we don't import the culture.
They talked about everything BUT what they acually should do,
Cell phones and flee? Give me a break.
Seems like they are.....
Do cattle cars ring a bell. They need to ARM THEMSELVES.
The congregant who is armed is only protecting/defending him/her self and family. Protecting the whole group is not within his/her purview. And I would say the same for a school teacher, or school office worker.
