Stop & Shop adds security to stores amid employee strike
WFSB ^

uesday marked day six of the strike at Stop & Shop locations across New England.

Workers continue to tell Channel 3 there's no end in sight.

However, a union spokesperson said talks are ongoing.

Eyewitness News was the first to break the story last week on the Channel 3 app.

The last time workers at the supermarket chain went on strike was more than 30 years ago. At that time, it only lasted a day.

Workers said they thought the current strike would be over by now. However, that's not the case.

"At the beginning, I thought, ‘oh, this won’t last,’ but it doesn’t seem like anything is happening," said Denise Trani, Stop & Shop worker.

...

They said they're fighting to maintain their benefits and to keep overtime from holiday and Sunday work shifts.

Stop & Shop said it countered with healthcare benefits at below market costs, paid time off, pay increases for all associates and no changes to Sunday time and a half premiums for full-time workers. Current part-time workers would keep their current Sunday premium plan.

The useful idiots in the union begin used as pawns to help the union bosses look good. No sane person would strike over keeping almost all of their benefits the same with the exception of a $3-5/week in insurance premiums, though I doubt the Union told them that.

Meanwhile, over at ShopRite and Big Y, customers who have never tried these stores are coming in and checking out the offerings.

Bottom line on everyones wants and desires today....is just more of more. And it’s the socialist let movement that’s pushing this to fracture the country.

Stop and Shop will soon be replacing all their cashier’s with automated checkout stations and the workers losing their jobs can thank the Union.

A guy I ran into in the gym said he really liked Stop and Shop because he could do his own checkout, and didn’t have to wait in line.

Just got bcd from Shoprite. Never saw it that crowded.

Stopped at my local S&S on Thursday right after they went on strike to pick up two things I needed for dinner. I was coming tom work, I was tired, and I wasn’t about to drive 5 miles in the opposite direction for a bag of frozen peas. Surly checkout witch who got in my face screaming at me cost S&S any future sales from my family.

Good luck with that.

But hey, they keep telling themselves “union strong,” that will pay the bills while they strike or loose their jobs, right?

I would never cross a picket. Those guys/gals are doing what they have to do for themselves and their families and I respect that. If their union is leading them down the wrong path they will pay with their jobs if they are willing. Jobs disappear in automation. Minimum wage and bargained for wages have an affect on employment but labor has to recognize that they are numbers only.

8 of every 10 of those workers will be replaced by robots. Enjoy your strike while you can. The HAL-9000 will always show up for work.

The small grocery store chain that I go to, Trucci’s, was unusually packed yesterday. They have better prices than S&S to begin with.

Market Basket in Waltham was busier than usual today. S&S is going to lose some customers.

our local Walmart did that not too long ago ... well, not quite ALL, but nearly all checkout stands were replaced with new self-checkouts ...

and they’re the best self-checkout units i’ve every seen, by far ... they’re super-speedy to scan, suck in the paper money and dispense the paper change ... they’re so fast at handling cash it’s like they’re ATMs from space ships or something ...

As in mafia-like "family" and *we* aren't made members...

Sounds like the ones what my local Walmart just got. Very quick, Reliably scans the first try, no issues with unexpected I do mean bag, takes payment and dispenses change very quickly. I can see Stop & Shop adding more of these in the very near future.

There is one on my beat. No one is crossing the line. There might be a dozen cars in the lot.

I love the self checkout. Only problem is I prefer to shop when they open up at 6 a.m. and they don’t open the self checkout until 7 a.m.
