Report: Crown of Thorns, Artwork Saved From Notre Dame Blaze
Breitbart ^ | 4/15/2019 | Joshua Caplan

A French journalist reports the art and sacred relics inside Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral have been saved as a massive fire rips through the more than 800-year-old church Monday evening.

“Good news,” Paris Match reporter Nicolas Delesalle began. “All the works of art were saved. Delesalle, citing Father Frédéric, said the Crown of Thorns [pictured, above, during a ceremony in 2017], believed to be the wreath of thorns that was placed on the head of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion, was one of the priceless relics recovered from the blaze.

At the time of publication, there had been no official confirmation of the treasures being saved. The Associated Press reported the effort to retrieve the piece was ongoing, citing French sources, that “emergency services were trying to salvage the famed art pieces stored in the cathedral.”

Crowds of stunned Parisians and tourists — some crying, others offering prayers — watched on in horror in central Paris on Monday evening as flames engulfed the Notre-Dame cathedral.

Gasps and cries of “Oh my god” erupted at 7:50 pm when the top portion of the church’s spire came crashing down into an inferno that has spread to the entire roof.

More gasps came a few seconds later when the rest of the spire collapsed, caught on the cameras of thousands of mobile phones.

Thanks.

I think there’s a broader question about relics in general, but that’s for another discussion.

I’m glad anything that was saved, was saved, even if they aren’t real.

Did you know there is also a Holy Sponge?

What a perfect opportunity to swap the originals with cleverly produced fakes.

I have no idea, so therefore I don’t make any absolute statements about it, one way or the other.

I’m not the one disputing what the Church has claimed.

If the Church wishes to claim it is the crown of thorns “thought to be worn by Christ, at His crucifixion”, then so be it. I’m sure they have research and studies to back their claim.

Prove them wrong, before making an inane, drive by statement about it.

To do otherwise, is what is “silly”.

“Prove them wrong,”

It doesn’t work that way. People have to prove their claim, not make one and then demand it be disproven.

But further,

“If the Church wishes to claim it is the crown of thorns “thought to be worn by Christ, at His crucifixion”, then so be it. I’m sure they have research and studies to back their claim.”

That’s not much of a claim and no one could disprove they that think Christ wore it.

... and if you keep the fakes long enough,
tradition holifies them for you.

Ignorance is bliss. The Sainte Chapelle was built to house the Crown of Thornes and other relics now held by Notre Dame. It took ten years to build and was consecrated in April , 1248. It seems the relics have been around a very long time and happily will be around a very long time after you and I are dust.

I didn’t call you ignorant, and I’m sure you wouldn’t call me ignorant, either. Have a good ‘un.

From the photos in the article - it looks like a crown made out of gold, in the image of vegetation - not really thorns. Glad that it was saved - along with all of the other stuff.

oops!! Looking at it closer - the gold stuff is around the outside of a glass tube, that appears to have the thorns inside of the glass.

Wow! It would be interesting to know the history of the piece. Regardless if the church itself calls it a “Third Class” relic - it obviously is old and has a long history behind it and is worthy of respect.

Art is the only thing that’s holy to the French these days. It’s been that way since that Nietzsche guy stabbed the Most High and they lost their faith during two world wars.
……………………………………………………………………………………….
That Nietzsche guy was German, of course. Little to do with France.

I am sure the Grand Louis didn’t throw his money away without some extremely convincing evidence that the relic he acquired was authentic. He then spent ten years building the Sainte Chapelle to house the crown of thorns. The Sainte Chapelle was consecrated in 1248 so it wasn’t “yesterday” that the relic was discovered. I prefer to give weight to the probability the relic is real rather than dismiss it out of hand...and very rudely by you, I wish to state.

Nietzsche would have loathed FR.
