Western Civilization used to be a required course for liberal arts undergraduate students at most colleges. Today not only is it missing from the curriculum, it is despised on most campuses.

...it is despised on most campuses.I personally think this is because we have handed over education for the Government to handle. Why should anybody be surprised it continues to drift to Soviet style education?
