There is a great series I discovered while perusing documentaries from the library. It is called Civilisation: A Personal View by Kenneth Clark . Mr. Clark chronicles the history of art in Western Europe from the fall of Rome to the present day. He makes the case that the most genuine output that a Civilization produces is reflected in its art. Amen to that! I was fortunate that my father started showing me Civilization, and another gem, Ascent of Man (Dr. J. Bronowski) when I was only 10 years old. It fascinated me, anmd I have watched it with my own children.

Civilization was fathered by David Attenborough as a way to show off the BBC's new color programing. One of the people complained that art was first picked and that science needs its own show so 'Ascent of Man' was green lite.
I did see Ascent of Man while young and it's still worth watching today.
