I lived in Berlin for four years. My wife is German who was born during the war and grew up during the rebuilding of West Germany.
First, Notre Dame is more than a building. It is a work of art inside and out. It will be impossible to replicate. The wooden interior of the building was replete with carved paintings.
Second, the rebuilding of Germany and its major cities was not a matter of replacing the bombed out buildings with replicas. The Berlin of today scarcely resembles the capital before the war. Lots more glass and steel.
Third, I lived a couple of years in Warsaw. The Poles painstakingly rebuilt the totally destroyed old center of the city, Stare Miasto. They used architectural drawings and pictures of the old town. They even used many of the old bricks. But they could not recreate many of the finer details because they lacked the skilled artisans to duplicate them.
I guess it is okay to be pollyannaish during times like this, but the sad reality is that Notre Dame has been largely destroyed. We can create some facsimile like they do in Las Vegas, but we cannot replace Notre Dame.
Good point.
They (islam) have an ally in this guy

Reportedly, the French government nickeled and dimed this renovation project.
If that’s the case, hope the folks responsible end up in the hot seat.
Say what you will, but I’ve mostly been watching the coverage on RT.com.
if you have seen St Pete’s you know there are number of side altars In the near future on Friday’s Francis will allow muslim services on said altar in the name of world commonality of worship (my guess as to his excuse) Muslims will flood St. pete’s on friday and turn it into a mosque once a week. Then creeping Islam will take over parts on other days.
At first glance it looks like two people, but looking closer it could be spires from the other side.
You make good points, thank you.
AFP reporting the structure has been “saved and preserved”.
Fox is worse than CNN in trying to cover up any Muslim involvement. I was watching CNN earlier and Chris Cuomo actually said they didn’t know what caused the fire. I was shocked he wasn’t in ‘defend the Muslims’ mode.
Wow. FNC just hit a new low on that bottom-dwelling program of theirs “The Five”. Greg Gutfeld decides to turn the fire into a joke... “How’d you like to be the guy who burned down an 850 year old building? I mean... I’ve knocked over vases....”
Very funny, there... moron.
Black guy sitting in for Juan Williams says at least there’s a good side of this - and (get ready for this!) it’s that no one has suggested terrorism.
Yeah. Right. What could possibly give anyone THAT idea? Right? Absurd. Settled science. Move on.

On France24 it is now being said that “the structure has been saved”, I guess meaning the can rebuild using the old stone foundation and walls, etc.
I suspect they knew what had to be sacrificed in order to save the structure. A lot of Monday-Morning Quarterbacks criticizing the Fire Fighting effort.
Seems significant the most iconic church in Europe would go up in flames during Holy Week.
Thats what is called synchronicity in Jungian theory, regardless of who or what started the fire.
From what I’ve been reading in the foreign language press, there is plenty to criticize at the decision-making level.
Were any Amish near the scene prior to the fire?
IOW, the firefighters are not the problem. The people hamstringing them are.
Won’t be long and fnc will be on the big screen at mecca
“The structure has been saved” but I think there’s going to be little more than exterior walls and ruins. See, e.g., Coventry Cathedral.
it’s been said they were evacuating but also scrambling to remove what artwork and such that they could from the building before they poured the water on.
