Notre Dame Cathedral on Fire

Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.

Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.

A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.

Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.

It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

I know how upset you are, nutmeg. I, too, have visited both churches several times. Notre Dame, to me, is one of the glories of western civilization and to see it reduced to ashes is such a symbol of our collapse. I wouldn’t be surprised if muzzies were recruited to work on the cathedral in order to show we Catholics aren’t “prejudiced”!

Notre Dame is.... was one of the amazing glories of western civilization... probably the most iconic symbol / building of all of Western Europe. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Glad we saw beautiful Notre Dame in its full glory. If any of it survives, it will *never* be the same again.

I wonder if this is the work of arson/terrorism vs. something more mundane, like an electrical fire (things often go wrong when retrofitting old buildings for electric lighting).

The house across the street from a family member burned down a few months ago during renovations. But this has all the hallmarks of terrorist arson coming so soon after the NZ mosque attack. And muslims in France are well known for their car burnings.

The government and EU will attempt to cover up the celebrations. The cause of the fire remains unclear. Something related to the renovations is plausible. I recall when workers renovating the dome of the old Iowa state capital in Iowa City, my personal favorite architecture in the state, managed to burn off the dome. But even if there is zero direct muslim guilt for THIS fire many of them will be unable to keep from celebrating over the loss of this symbol. Those celebrations need to be well documented and publicized in contrast to the mourning of real Frenchmen. How well the current government responded to the fire also appears questionable. Whether they could have done better deserves to be asked afterwards. Getting the political change needed to save France has been difficult. If Macron can be reasonably tagged as the man who lost Notre Dame, perhaps some good will have come from the tragedy. Le Pen and her niece need to be careful with their rhetoric, but need to be seen.
