Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

Its symbolic of what has happened to French Christian culture. Maybe God has decided he doesn’t want to be in France any longer.

This is no doubt connected to the NZ mosque attack. Another church in France that an arson attack right after that happened. Arson is a favorite tool of the muzzies. Recall the torching of cars that happens frequently in Europe.

Nonsense. This is a national tragedy. It bothers me deeply. I have been there. The is a loss to mankind. It goes far beyond the French people.

Are you kidding? This is one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture built by peasant artisans. No one has these skills today. It’s lost.
On all the feeds I’m seeing...I only see one stream of water on one side being used to fight the fire. I would have expected to see multiple streams being thrown as high as possible. Wonder what is happening?

Who’s doing the renovations? Something tells me it isn’t highly-skilled craft guilds from the middle ages.
Best hope is that the walls don’t collapse inward from the forces the flying buttresses are bearing upon them. Now that the roof structure is gone, the forces wanting to spread the walls outward is also gone.

Because the majority of the wood is there. The majority of the bottom portion is stone.
Bingo. I suspect the authorities won’t look too hard for the no doubt Muslim suspect(s) fearing an escalation in violence.
