As a young, motivated resident in internal medicine, I began to moonlight in a freestanding, full-service psychiatric hospital. I became fascinated with the medical care of the psychiatric patient and the management of substance use disorders. In time, I became a director of Medical Services and Program Medical Director for Chemical Dependency Services and spent the better part of three decades developing expertise in the care of psychiatric patients.
This is why I support a mental health reform bill, Senate Bill 640, by state Sen. John Moorlach (R-Costa Mesa).
Never did I imagine I would live in a state which would systematically allow patients with massive mental health needs to languish and deteriorate in the most unconscionable, abject circumstances. It was unthinkable to me as a young physician that, decades after I began my career, leadership in the State of California would in the name of some abstract, misplaced notion of compassion literally position the symptoms of major psychiatric illness as a guiding principle to be protected.
The very symptoms causing desperately ill patients to spill into our streets are being protected in the name of compassion. This is dialing back to a Medieval understanding of psychiatric illness and is absolutely outrageous, particularly in the era of effective treatments which can restore patients to stability.

And he has it right. Any person that cares about these people, or the general social welfare, would support committing those who are so obviously bat sh!t crazy.
And it’s a high profile opinion piece on the SacBee editorial page.
The large majority of mental illness is caused by drug use.
Ban drugs. Execute drug dealers. Institutionalize brain damaged addicts in facilities.
You will see a marked improvement within 12 months.
“Never did I imagine I would live in a state which would systematically allow patients with massive mental health needs to languish and deteriorate in the most unconscionable, abject circumstances.”
Somebody doesn’t have a very good imagination.
The leftists succeeded in emptying the insane asylums in the 60s and 70s. The nutcases were unleashed on the “general population”, in our schools and workplaces. It’s a disaster, not surprisingly.
Welcome to 50 years and $10 trillion flushed down to the toilet to no effect ago.
Ever hear the definition of insanity?
There is a tremenous amout of ignorance-based stigma associated with mental illness that is a big reason many people with mental illness don't get the help they need. My son, though he has a serious brain disorder, is doing very well thanks to the right medications, therapy and having a family who got educated about these illnesses. There are no cures for mental illness, but recovery and hope is possible for many more people that we once thought possible.
We’ve never cracked down on drugs, we pretended to crack down on drugs. Most of the time, government has profited from it. Now the drug dealers control much of our government. Big Marijuana, followed by Big Meth and Big Opioids.
Look at Korea and Japan, no drugs, very little mental illness.
People living in tents are not homeless. People living in tents are squatters
The homeless problem is a legal problem, a squatter problem
No mental illness in Japan?
Really?
As I’ve become quite a weeb over the past few years, it is eminently clear that you are pulling this out of your hindquarters.
Go look up what a hikkimori is. And that’s just ONE mental illness that is rampant in Japan.
Marijuana Use and Resulting Mental Illness/Brain Damage:

Drugs do cause some mental illness, for instance, studies have shown that marijuana use by someone whose brain is still developing (up to age 30 according to a psychologist I saw speak recently) precipitates psychotic disorder.
Some people are born with mental disorders, such as schizophrenia or autism. I think that in some cases, the underlying disorder feeds into a drug abuse disorder. In any case, drug abuse and mental illness need to be treated, and we need to continue the research to find better treatments.
Hikkimori is the result of internet addiction. You would know that if you spent time in Japan.

Put them in a heated warehouse on the outskirts of town. Separate the men from the women. Big screen movies and leftover resturant food to keep them there.
Give them open areas so they can still feel like they are crapping in public.
Yes, we don’t have a homeless problem, we have a DRUG problem.
And... it’s a mental illness. Falsifying your claim that there is no mental illness in Japan AND falsifying your claim that drugs are the cause of mental illness.
In the latter case you are confusing cause and effect. The former claim is just ludicrous and you should feel foolish for proposing it unironically.
Right, the top two countries for suicide have very little mental illness. Korea and Japan also have high rates of drinking.
Yep. The libtards closed so many of the institutions, we would have to reopen a few. But the alternative is bringing San Fransicko to a town near you.
