O'Rourke's popularity was entirely manufactured by the media. Like most manufactured fads - be they in politics, TV shows, or pop music, the popularity fades as soon as the new car smell goes and the masses want to see hype over something or someone else.

One thing O'Rourke did accomplish is set a new low bar for Presidential contenders. Even Obama's resume - that of a very junior Senator with zero legislative accomplishments - looked a lot more impressive than O'Rourke's, who accomplished nothing during his 6 years in the House and even less during the rest of his life.
