AUSTIN, Texas A lawmaker said a child on the Capitol floor on Thursday was diagnosed with whooping cough. "I had my daughter with me on Thursday on the floor as I do on many days. On Friday in the afternoon my phone started blowing up. Erin Zwiener, a state representative, said she immediately reached out to her pediatrician.
"It was particularly worrisome because whooping cough can be deadly to infants," said Zwiener. "Its a disease that, for most adults, is a really bad cold, but many young children dont survive it." Dr. Maria Monge is a pediatrician who said whooping cough is a very contagious bacterial illness that spreads easily between people. "We dont hear about it unless theres an outbreak or unless someones been diagnosed with it, and theres a lot of potential exposures," said Monge. Monge said it's especially concerning for infants.
"The biggest deal is for children under the age of one, who are most susceptible to the effects of pertussis, and the reason why is because a lot of times their symptoms arent as severe as older people, so its not diagnosed," said Monge. "Their presenting symptom is that they stop breathing, and so it can be potentially deadly in that age group, so thats why were most concerned about it."
Zwiener said her child is vaccinated, but while her child is expected to be okay, she's still nervous. Weve only had two colds in nine months -- Im happy with those results," said Zweiner. "But it is for me, at this point, the scariest thing about parenting." The Department of State Health Services sent a letter to notify employees to consult their primary health care provider.

Interesting timing.
Yeah, it is, isn’t it? I am completely fed up with many people not listening to what I tell them. If people are not willing to listen and then act on what they are told that is the truth, they deserve what they get.
I worked at a 3rd party insurance administrator and the head of our department was out sick for a day and then came back to the office.
She then had an “all hands” staff meeting held in her rather small office with most of us, about 20, standing close together and close to her, crowded around her desk.
She was coughing up a storm, short of breath, red faced and feverish, copious amounts of sweat pouring off her, obviously still very sick.
She told us she had Whooping Cough, but it was OK because her “doctor”, a Homeopath, told her to take various vitamins and do a colon cleanse to rid her of the harmful stuff. (I am not kidding). She also proudly stated she was against all vaccines.
One of my co-workers had just returned from maternity leave and had an infant at home and was really pissed as pertussis can be fatal to infants. She left the meeting in disgust.
The next day this manger was out of the office again. This time because her teenage daughter who lived with her and had recently given birth to an out of wedlock baby, the newborn infant was in the pediatric ICU with pertussis.
Fortunately, the baby survived and came home a week later, and my co-worker’s baby didn’t get sick probably thanks to her mother having been vaccinated.
Stupid is as stupid does.
