A lawyer for President Trump has bad news for congressional Democrats crusading to release the president’s tax returns.
In a letter Friday, William Consovoy said the IRS is forbidden from divulging tax information without a “legitimate legislative purpose.”He also maintained that doing so would set a “dangerous legal precedent”
This, after House Ways and Means chair Richard Neal petitioned the IRS for six years worth of the president’s tax returns. Consovoy called the move a “transparent effort” to harass a sitting president, simply out of dislike for his politics.

Who gets to decide what constitutes "legitimate legislative purpose"? My guess is it'll be the courts.
As is the case with most any topic, the democrat politicians rely on the fact that their voter are stupid.
In this case they are trying to say tax returns will reveal every aspect of Trumps financial world. It does not.
I don’t recall submitting any tax returns showing how much money I owed or to whom. I don’t recall any of my returns indicating if I am worth a dollar or a billion.
Does anyone doubt that Obama Inc. didn’t see Trumps tax returns within 24-48 hours of Trump bringing up the Birth Certificate?
