A jury in Las Vegas flatly rejected former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid's lawsuit against an exercise band maker he blamed for injuries including blindness in one eye he suffered when the stretchy device slipped from his grasp and he fell face-first a little more than four years ago.
After eight days of testimony, the eight-member civil trial jury deliberated about an hour before declaring that Reid never proved the first of 10 questions they were asked to decide: that the device Reid, former senator from Nevada, used that day was a TheraBand made by Ohio-based Hygenic Corp.
Jurors never saw the actual device because Reid's adult son, attorney Leif Reid, disposed of it soon after Harry Reid was injured.
Reid and his wife, Landra Gould, weren't in the courtroom when the verdict was read. The 79-year-old former Democratic Party leader used a wheelchair throughout the two-week trial, following treatment for pancreatic cancer and back surgery.
Their lawyer, James Wilkes II of Tampa, Florida, said he respected the Nevada jury's decision. "I may not agree with the outcome, but I agree with the way we got there," Wilkes said.
TheraBand lawyer Laurin Quiat was subdued in victory.
"My client always believed in the product, believes that the product is safe, is not unreasonably dangerous for anyone, and they stand behind it," he said. "That's all I have to say."
Reid and his wife sought unspecified monetary damages because they said the product was defective and the company failed to warn the public it was dangerous for elderly people like Reid to use.
I wouldn’t wish pancreatic cancer on anyone, except Harry Reid and maybe John McCain.
It was his own brother.
I’m wondering if the jury was allowed to know that Reid’s drunk brother was in town at the time of the incident?
I thought two white guys in MAGA hats beat him up.
How it ever got to trial, given that they didn’t even make the damned thing, is proof that our judicial system is in need of repair.
I personally knew a mob guy in Reno who ran the hotel food device unions
He was a made man in the DeCavalcante family of New Jersey who were allied in Reno with the New England Patriarca mob
I was thinking the same thing.
The trial went on for 8 days and Harry didn't present the band the caused the injury to the court. Most murder trials in my neck of the woods don't even last that long..
Not to self - if planning to sue for product liability, remember not to throw away the product.
You mean his brother...
OK you guys - cut it out! All of you! Stop! I just got off the Babylon Bee site and can’t take any more humor today.
Harry Reid got a beatdown from likely political donars he failed....Likely so as he did have dark friends in the underworld.
It was his brother.
Not sure if his brother follows politics at all.
Luca Brazzi was unavailable for comment.
Tell the truth Harry...
You just tried to set up a homo sexual encounter with the wrong guy.
Harry should sue his brother. Hes the guy who (reportedly) socked Reid in the eye.
How did this even get to court? Even IF this company made the band, how is it their fault he slipped because it fell off? That’s like suing because your jogging pants fell down and you tripped. What the heck?
Ha ha
his wife gets drunk and kicks his ass.
