The headline of Jonathan Zimmerman's article in the Washington Post, "How Trump finally turned Republicans against McCarthyism," alerted me to the possibility that Zimmerman has never spoken to a Republican in the wild.
The subhead, "After nearly 70 years, Republicans have stopped defending Joe McCarthy," confirmed my suspicions. Zimmerman insists that the "new consensus" among Republicans is that "McCarthyism was, in fact, a massive, unpardonable assault on freedom, fairness and the rule of law." This is nuts. In reality, McCarthy's status among Republicans is higher now than it has been since his untimely death in 1957.

Yeah, we always trust Democr@ps to tell us what we think.
McCarthyism was not the unwarranted attack they claim it was. It was a VERY REAL search for infiltrators.
The infiltrators won.
Ann Coulter explains this very well in her book.
SHUT UP all you Coulter haters here... We should thank God she is on our side. I don’t agree with her all the time either. (for example I strongly disagree with her ongoing refusal to marry me and let me bear her children, but I digress)
She is NOT on our side, she hasnt been for a long time
What constitutes being on the other side? She wants the wall built?
You can bear children?
The WP is so bad that I really believe that it is a C_A op, or something equivalent. Nothing but lies come from that paper. And it is the only one that I will never follow a link to.
Her book is great. Completely obliterates the left’s dishonest narrative on McCarthy.
For an even deeper read on the subject, there’s Blacklisted By History by M. Stanton Evans.
The left was proven decisively wrong on McCarthy when the KGB archives were opened in the 1990s and we could see from the inside what the communists were up to.
If you point out ‘who’ the communists were you will get banned most every where, here included.
Just say’n...
Its Achilles heel was in its absurd breadth, in which intellectual dabblers or questionable temporary associates were subjected to witch hunts. Eventually it was rebuked by men of stature and it faded. Any new fans today aren’t familiar with that. Was it the glory of America, or the glory of McCarthy, for which this was ultimately done? Breadth would suggest the latter.
If we are concerned about America, the best thing we can do is to bring America to God, which will serve to immunize it against ideas of giving government to socialist plans, instead taking more and more charity functions under church auspices. Don’t go on witch hunts. Let the good thing overcome the bad one by clear superiority.
She supported Mitt, then she supported Cristy. She attacks Trump at every turn.
Sorry no way is she on our side.
Venona vindicated McCarthy. He’s a hero.
The problem isn’t in question. The method to address the problem is.
As an aside, it’s ironically funny now that Democrats complain that Russians colluded to influence American elections.
Through what essentially was extrajudicial punishments for which effective innocents had little or no appeal?
The problem doesn’t vindicate the un-American approach.
I, speaking for at least one Republican, believe history has vindicated Tail Gunner Joe.
What “punishments” do you speak of ? Who are the “innocents” ? What is this “un-American approach” ?
Like you do not know?
Before long we can swap out Joe’s name and insert PDJT in it’s place. Sad dang state of affairs.
Tail-Gunner Joe actually pursued a real enemy.
