Trump loyalist Gaetz eyes Senate bid in Alabama
The Hill ^ | 04/04/2019 | Scott Wong

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, one of President Trump’s most devoted loyalists on Capitol Hill who represents the Florida Panhandle, has told GOP colleagues he is considering moving across the state line to run for the Senate in Alabama in 2020, several House lawmakers told The Hill.

Some of those discussions took place as recently as Thursday. The rumor had been bouncing around the Capitol for weeks but took a more serious turn in recent days when Gaetz began privately discussing the idea with fellow lawmakers.

“He’s talking about running for Senate in Alabama. They have a one-day residency requirement there,” said a GOP lawmaker who knows Gaetz well. “POTUS [President of the United States] would probably endorse him.”

Sources close to Gaetz, 36, said that "people in Trump's orbit" are personally encouraging the sophomore congressman to run for the Senate seat now held by freshman Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.). Those Trump allies are pointing to Alabama’s liberal requirement that people can run for the Senate so long as they are 30 years old and have been a resident for a minimum of one day.

Gaetz would be pitted him against Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) in the GOP primary. Byrne, 64, has been traversing the Yellowhammer State for nearly a year to meet with voters and officially launched his Senate bid in February.

Good point, but he probably thinks Rubio is too young and entrenched to beat.

Absurd...why create a major issue that could be used against you in a seat that should be winnable as a key pickup? Let’s not mess up this up again with a garbage candidate.

But is a move from the Redneck Rivera to Alabama proper really carpetbagging?

If Hillary moving to New York solely to run for the Senate was carpetbagging then this certainly would be as well.

Uh, dumb idea, for Alabama Republicans and also for him personally cause he’d mess up his certain House reelection trying to pull a stunt like this.

In other news Tommy Tuberville has announced he’s running.

Can’t handicap sports figures, as I don’t know squat about them or their ideology. Only AL figure I knew was Paul “Bear” Bryant, and he could’ve been elected Governor or Senator for the asking.

He tweeted “MAGA”.

He was the coach of Auburn though, they are the 2nd team in the state, more people are fans of Alabama (Crimson Tide), of which Bear Bryant was the coach.

The fan demographics map is striking, major advantage for the Tide so I don’t know how much being an Auburn Coach will help him in this race.

I forgot to mention, Sean Spicer signed on to the Tuberville campaign. Not a point in his favor in my estimation.

I have been beyond surprised that Jeff Sessions hasn’t decided to run for his old seat back honestly

Unless Twinkle gets in, I prefer Mo Brooks as the most un-pc of the nominees.

He’d have to explain to the voters of Alabama why he did almost nothing as Attorney General, especially with the epic level of Derp State corruption, and why he refused to put the kibosh on that fake Russian collusion Mueller bull$hit. Why should incompetence be rewarded ?

Hardly, nothing. I defended him for most of his tenure until I realized he was utterly incompetent. I thought it was a cover so as not to attract attention, but he literally did nothing. Where were the investigations ? Where were the indictments ? Why did he recuse himself from a FAKE investigation into the President that dragged out for 2 years ? That’s on him. As for being an “asset”, he certainly was for Derp State interests.

With your ad hominem attacks not withstanding.

Sessions would cake walk the election if he ran again in AL.

You may not like him, but promoting the idea he wouldn’t win and that’s why he won’t run, because of some revolution within the republican voters of AL against him, is purely delusion on your part.

You are welcome to believe what you want, but that doesn’t make it true.

Telling the truth is ad hominem ? Tell you what, Ham, how ‘bout you respond point by point to why he failed to do his job as Attorney General ? Also, explain how you think Alabama Republicans are mental retards that they would merely ignore his rank incompetence and failure to do his job, and how they would blindly return him to office to continue to serve the Derp State ? You certainly have a low opinion of them. I’m sure most want to know why he did nothing during 2 years on the job and stood by while that Mueller fiasco continued on.

Do please attempt to answer those points instead of using mindless rah-rah cheerleading.

Oh, btw, go look up my posts on Sessions for the past 2 decades and you will see I held him in high esteem and served as a defender of his even AFTER most people saw the writing on the wall when he began his tenure as AG.

Incompetence and serving the Derp State must NOT be rewarded. Why do you think it should ?

I was on the Sessions bandwagon for a year. I could not believe that someone who seemed to be such a good man could permit such lawlessness. There “had to be a plan.”

But there wasn’t.

Same thing now with Barr. “Barr’s got it. It’s comin’. He’s about to drop the hammer.”

No. There is no hammer.
