Democrats blocked a GOP effort Tuesday to change Senate rules and speed up confirmation of most of President Trumps nominees, leaving Republicans with few options other than a nuclear confrontation.
The rules change has become a major test of political wills, with Republicans saying Democrats are treating Mr. Trump unfairly compared to past presidents. Democrats counter that Mr. Trumps picks are so bad that they deserve the obstruction.
Tuesdays vote was 51-48, leaving the GOP well shy of the 60 needed to overcome Democrats filibuster.
In the wake of the vote, Republicans seemed resigned to going nuclear.
This needs to stop, Democrats know it needs to stop. We intend to stop this abuse of the rules this week, said Sen. Roy Blunt, chairman of the Rules Committee.
The GOP is eyeing whats become known as the nuclear option, which uses a shortcut method to change the understanding of Senate rules.
In this case, the change would effectively cut the maximum debate time available on most presidential nominees from 30 hours to two hours.
Its similar to a change Democrats orchestrated in 2013 for President Obamas nominees. But with Mr. Trump now in office, Democrats say theyre no longer eager to give up their chance to erect roadblocks.

Are you kidding?
They will find a way to #### us even if it means getting enough weak kneed republicans to get to 60.
hit them NOW while we got the muscle and stop being b.tches worrying about losing the senate.
the only thing obsolete should be Rs being wimps
IMO the filibuster in contrary to the word and intent of the Constitution. Has it ever been tested in SCUSA??
No. McConnell voted No for procedural reasons (so he can call the nuclear option) It was Mike Lee (R-Utah) who was the lone defector.
Sorry, McConnell voted no also, must be something about the procedure because he wants to pass this change.
Harry Reid was the first to go nuclear. He started it, and in the words of Pelosi, "embrass the suck."
Yes. The Senate rules dictate that somebody on the winning side of the cloture vote has to file a “motion to reconsider” if the matter is to be taken up again. The majority leader is typically tasked with this responsibility.
There is NO such thing as appeasement of liberals, nor should anyone expect professional conduct and/or courtesy from them. When they have power, they use it as they see fit - and don’t care for a second about who they offend or risk of backlash when they are out of power. They take what they can get when they can get it.
The Republicans should do the same, and take every opportunity to stack the courts and any other venue they can with normal sane people (i.e. non-liberals).
Thank you, TexasGurl!
I couldn’t agree more.
So he wants to go nuclear? If so: good...
IAC, I'm shocked that the "usual suspects" supported the President on this vote...
Yes he does, check post #26.
But McConnell already sold out the country to Illegals and his precious “Senate rules “.
I am a big fan of Dan Bongino, but he has been wrong on two things: He thought we would narrowly retain the House (can’t fault him much there) and he supported Mike Lee for SC.
I can’t abide that now.
So if the Democrats did it when they controlled the Senate, why did the GOP undo it and revert to the old rules when they took control?
They didn’t, the Reid nuclear option rule change was for the Senate filibuster for executive branch nominations and federal judicial appointments, but not for the Supreme Court.
This rule change is over debate time.
I prefer the ‘Ripley Option’ to their ‘nuclear option’. “Nuke D.C. from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.”
There has never been a time when a whole dem party worked so hard against a president.. there is not one redeeming qualites in the whole bunch of them... when one party does that much harm and hurt to the President and to our country, it ought to bring hail and brimstone down on them...
but the men in this country... the dem men.. and women.. have turned on the very fiber of our United States... and just when did they get the idea they could do this to the home of the brave and the land of the free!!
Strike every one of them... it’s called treason... to overthrow our President and take over all of government.. and change the laws so they can win when they can’t any other way.. and keep the control and keep the people poor and needy... for their control.... its evil personafide!!!
We have a new President... not one of them.. and we have (except for a few) an OLD GOP who can’t change if their live depended on it!
Exactly like it’s namesake this Senate is designed to do nothing while it’s members are snout deep in the public trough.
That is one very powerful and compelling video. Everybody should take the time to watch it.
Everyday I wonder just what exactly democrat elected members of congress do for the American citizens who pay their salaries, regardless of party membership. They are full time obstructionists who will rule or ruin this whole country until they are back in office. Given their behavior since candidate Clinton lost the election, it is obvious that if they ever get back in control of the govt, further elections will be a thing of the past. They are desperate to destroy this Republic and replace it with a one world govt. Pres Trump needs a strong GOP with strong leadership. Our country as we know it is in the balance and Pres Trump has shown his party how to work hard and never give up. I hope enough of the GOP is finally on board with him. Lord knows we have waited a very long time for a show of strength and patriotism from more than the brave members who already have and are putting themselves on the line for Pres Trump and this country.
