America would run out of avocados in weeks if Trump shuts border with Mexico, grower warns

If President Trump follows through with his threat to close the Southern Border with Mexico this week, say goodbye to your avocado toast.

A top distributor and grower of avocados has warned that the U.S. would run out of the fruit in three weeks if imports from Mexico are halted amid any possible border shutdown.

“You couldn’t pick a worse time of year because Mexico supplies virtually 100 percent of the avocados in the U.S. right now," Steve Barnard, president and chief executive of Mission Produce, told Reuters. "California is just starting and they have a very small crop, but they’re not relevant right now and won’t be for another month or so."

It wouldn't just be the ripe fruit affected by any potential disruption in trade. Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture reviewed by Reuters.

But the growth and popularity of avocados as a healthy dietary choice may catch the attention of Americans if there's any large-scale disruption.

I believe the seaports will still be open. Put the avocados on a boat.

Plant a tree, and grow your own. Better to wait a while for them to grow, than to possibly die at the hands of illegal aliens.

Actually, I don’t eat avocados anyway, so I could care less...personally speaking.

Remember when the options were seasonal vegetables and fruits in the Grocery Store?

How did we survive?

Hawaiian avocados are way better!

But we have to pay the railroad freight costs for shipping them on the trains across the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to California. Oh, wait, they haven't been built yet.

And Mexico will not get our rhubarb! So, there!

Aguacates maduros, peos seguros! BTW, this has nothing to do with Venezuela. It’s just a little avocado humor from south of the border.

Maybe the drug lords and coyotes can start smuggling other things besides dope. This could be a win-win."

Or we could set American ingenuity on it,
"The heaviest avocado is 2.495 kg (5 lbs 8 oz), and was achieved by Felicidad Pasalo (USA), in Hilo, Hawaii, USA, on 3 January 2018."

Anyone recall what happened when the US blocked all imports from Iran in the 80s? Yep, basically ended all pistachio imports. There was virtually no pistachio production in the US. Horrors, Iran was the major producer for the world.

Then shazam, California developed into a major pistachio producer and then no one gave a good damn about Iran’s nuts.

I don’t need Mexican avocados.

I got my own avocado tree in my backyard, and I get hundreds each year from the one tree. Unfortunately, the tree doesn’t produce year-round,but, I can get by until next avocado season out of my tree.

Otherwise, no avocados for me. I’ll settle for ‘maduros’. Yumm!

In a way they still are seasonal. At least in MI the fruits are really bland and tasteless or a little bitter.

Brilliant trivia I know:
Scientists have figured out that the shape of avocados and their pits are that way to conform to the inside of a mammoth’s mouth and to appeal to their appetities. They evolved so mammoths would leave their pit laden b.m. behind all over the landscape and grow more avocado trees.
Impressed?
