Among the anti-American crowd, there are theories about how foreign arms sales underpin* the American economy to an extent that it would collapse without those sales. Erdogan is about to discover that the US economy will survive and prosper without F-35 sales to Turkey. If the F-35 is definitely not being exported to Turkey, the Greek Air Force, an F-35 partner, will be breaking out the champagne.

* At about 0.25% of national output in a typical year, total arms sales are not particularly significant for the American economy. Arms sales to Turkey, specifically, are an insignificant part of an insignificant number.

Because that’s how the arms industry works. We don’t buy enough replacements to keep various production lines open after the initial order is filled. If we want to keep making them we have to sell some elsewhere. That’s true for all arms manufacturing everywhere.
