An Outbreak Spreads Fear: Of Measles, of Ultra-Orthodox Jews, of Anti-Semitism

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. — Erica Wingate was working at a clothing store in town this week when a male customer, with the black hat and sidelocks typically worn by ultra-Orthodox Jews, started coughing.

Another shopper standing next to him suddenly dropped the item she had been holding and clutched her child. “She was buying something, and she just threw it down,” Ms. Wingate recalled. “She said, ‘Let’s go, let’s go! Jews don’t have shots!’”

A measles outbreak in this suburban New York county has sickened scores of people and alarmed public health experts who fear it may be a harbinger of the growing influence of the anti-vaccine movement. But it has also intensified long-smoldering tensions between the rapidly expanding and insular ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and secular society.

The authorities here in Rockland County have traced the spread of measles to ultra-Orthodox families whose children have not been vaccinated.

And so some residents say they now wipe public bus seats and cross the street when they see ultra-Orthodox Jews. Hasidic leaders said they feared not only a rise in anti-Semitism but an invasion of their cloistered community by the authorities under the guise of public health.

On Tuesday, county officials took the extraordinary step of announcing a state of emergency, barring unvaccinated children under 18 from public places, including restaurants, shopping centers, houses of worship and schools.

By what right can the County bar kids from public places?

And about what are the vaccinated people scared?

Exactly. Vaccinated children are at no risk of becoming infected.

Babies or little children that haven’t had both rounds of shots are in real danger. Along with people that may be immunity compromised. Some immunities can also wear off and may need boosters. Not certain about the measles vaccine but this is new territory.

I am a germaphobe. I do my grocery shopping early. Try to avoid crowds, and if I hear or see someone hacking/coughing practically break into a sprint. I do not care if the person is purple, brown, or their appearance. They cough or look sick, I vacate the area.

I don’t believe this story. It’s most likely a hoax. Sorry.

*** Wait until everyone is forced to re-use grocery bags! ***

At that point I will be using Walmart Grocery Pickup a lot more than I do now. The only icky part of that is having to sign your name on the touch screen after they load your items. I always forget my little stylus so have to touch the screen. Ugh.

I will tell you a story that is not a hoax that I know personally. My cousin Willie came down with Leukemia and he was making a very good recovery and everyone was celebrating. But he didn’t believe in having his kids inoculated. One of his kids was exposed at measles at school. The kid didn’t get all that sick, but it killed Willie.

Keep a box of those disposable thin plastic gloves food servers use at the deli. You can get them from a restaurant supply store.

Local news interviewed county execs on this and asked how will you protect the public in public places. He said it can only be controlled in county buildings not malls, businesses, shopping centers etc. so your on your own people! The orthodox community will run with anti Semitism, they brought this on themselves and the mental progressives will allow this at a greater cost to the general public. Watch and see

It is being widely-reported. I used to work near there. This isn't fake news.

The question is whether or not this is anti-Semitism shrouded under public health concerns. I have NEVER heard of such a local government response like this in any outbreak. Indeed, the 2014 measles outbreak in Ohio which was localized in an Amish community was not followed up by local police state controls over movement.

The local Reichskanzler-like tendencies are stunning.

I wonder if this same response would be happening if this outbreak was in a “sanctuary” area. Plenty of reports of TB, measles, fevers and other things (cholera?) from those areas, but they’re swept down the memory hole.
