The greatest American of the 20th century.
My friend said that Patton would often bust infantrymen for minor infractions, like not having your tie on straight. Good for discipline, I suppose. But bad for morale.
...
My guess is that Patton did that for a secondary psychological reason. It may have hurt the feelings of the ones he busted, but the word would get around.
I would definitely put Ike above either of the Roosevelts, and way above FDR. FDR was a Socialist and extended the Great Depression by nearly a decade. He should be near the bottom of the list, just above Carter who is just above Obama.

Don’t forget Wilson!
As a young boy I recall a remark a school mate made about President Eisenhower. His joke was: “I hear they are going to make Eisenhower dolls, you wind them up and they do nothing”.
This joker wound up staying in school from 1967 way past the war and became a professor. A die hard lefty as a kid, a die harder lefty today.
Ike was a great man, all the way around. How I wish we had more “do nothing” presidents. Just think, the Great Society never would have happened. Obamacare would never have been heard of. The military-industrial complex could not have grown as a result of endless wars. Etc, etc.
I will never forget the day Ike died. Nixon had just been inaugurated only weeks before, and the front page of our newspaper had a candid shot of the president in his limousine as it passed the photographer.
His face looked as though someone had kicked him in the gut. Given all that had taken place between the two men, he obviously respected his former boss and was truly shaken by the thought of a world without Eisenhower.
That’s a good one.
Woodrow Wilson - D, the pioneer of todays modern day progressives was the most racist president we ever had. He set blacks, who were rising slowly but surely within in the federal government back through segregation.
I remember that one. I’ve carried the memory of it most of my life. Thanks for posting it.

PNG.
Remember seeing this Mauldin drawing in the local paper shortly after Ike died.
I Like Ike.
Like a lot of us ‘Boomers I remember watching President Eisenhower on black and white tv. Probably my favorite President. Maybe tied with Reagan and Trump.
Best book I’ve read on Eisenhower- ‘The Hidden-Hand Presidency’ by Fred Greenstein.
I’d bet a bundle that Trump read and absorbed every lesson in it. I’m certain that I see him using the same tricks that Ike used in dealing with the press and with Congress.
Yep. A lot of people thought that the German Autobahn inspired Ike to build the Interstate Highway System.
But in fact it was that 1919 Washington DC to San Francisco Motor Transport Corps convoy.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the young ones know what we are talking about.

My dad had exactly the same complaint about General Patton when Patton commanded 7th Army. Patton even disciplined some Army doctors for not having their helmets on while operating. More than a few soldiers were pleased when Alexander Patch took over for Patton.
In the early days of Vietnam dad was assigned to the Advanced Research Project Agency in Saigon. At some point he ended up working with General Patton’s son, who was also an Army officer. He was very impressed by Patton the son, said he was one of the best officers he had worked with in his Army career.
I also remember watching Ike when he was president on black and white TV.
