It seems Nellie Ohr was well aware the National Security Agency can intercept and store every communication on the Internet. Did that affect her decision to become a ham radio operator?
In the late 1950s, when I was entering early adolescence, I became an amateur radio operator. It was like joining a very large audio-visual club whose geekiness was on steroids. Along with knowledge of electronics and Morse code, being a total techno-weirdo was an absolute pre-requisite.
The world back then seemed to be a much larger place, and communicating with foreign countries via the short-wave spectrum was a challenging and random proposition. So it was fun and exciting to communicate by code or voice with hams in remote parts of the planet. At least at first.
Unfortunately, the conversations were confined to exchanging names and locations, describing the strength and clarity of the other operators signal, and discussing the type of equipment and antenna being used. This never varied.

Mike Rogers shuts down Fusion GPS access to the NSA data base.
Nellie Ohr, who had approached Fusion GPS to do opposition research on Trump, gets a Ham radio licence to communicate with the Clinton campaign, John Brennan at the CIA and who knows who else in the Obama administration.
The Russia collusion narrative was planned and put into effect by the CIA, FBI, Fusion GPS and the Clinton campaign long before Crossfire Hurricane.
I don’t believe that HAM radio is not monitored by the NSA. It would be an obvious way for terrorist to communicate.
of course she did!
Over air signals have been monitored by the NSA from the get go. That’s their job. SIGINT.
Breaker-Breaker...Girls went Pee-pee.
Unless the HAM radio transmission was encrypted, NSA would be able to capture the traffic. I suspect that even if the Winlink product was used, the NSA would also be able to break the encryption.
She only had a Tech ticket, you can not do much communicating there. If they were using VHF/UHF locate repeater, I am sure local users would have heard the conversations.
Just got thinking about the new technology:
Maybe they were running a digital reflector channel with a zumspot. That would be the way to do it, you can make private calls. Does the NSA know about reflectors?
Communicating by ham radio as the same advantage as government officials communicating by non-government email servers... it gets around the Freedom of Information Act.
It might be difficult for NSA to know that HAM radio was being used, what’s frequencies were being used, and to have receivers within range to pick up low power transmissions. Both packet data and DMR can be encrypted with AES256 level encryption. It could be done in secret.
The NSA might capture it, but it won’t be subject to FOIA.
Low power to a ZumSpot to a DMR Reflector...
And who was controlling NSA? Hmmmm
And who was controlling NSA? Hmmmm
Bears repeating
I think there is a FR ping list for Hamsters, but don’t know who keeps it.
Yeah. Their job....
I am aware that the NSA has the ability to collect sub 5 watt transmissions .... over a very wide area. Think satellite receiver in low earth orbit.
Excellent article! I heard rumors that she was operating out of band...makes sense.

Conservative Treehouse discussed this Nellie Ohr/HAM radio issue over a year ago, if I remember correctly it was determined that the NSA does NOT capture HAM radio transmissions, there were logistical issues, I think.
I know Nellie relied heavily on martial privilege to avoid answering in her congressional testimony. Its a shame that Peter and Lisa cant claim cheaters privilege.
