Intersting
that is a triggering word for some...CROMWELL!
Trump is always on offense. That is how you score points and win. The Republicans are always on defense which means they’re weak losers. Until that mindset changes there will be no changes in the congress.
As bad as Cromwell was for the Irish he is extremely important if the development of representative government. He established the supremacy of the legislature, Charles II & James II were not able to cram the “divine right of kings” back into the English system. Regarding that period’s importance for US Constitutional history, the UK Commonwealth (Cromwell’s short lived “republican” government!) had a written constitutions (2) - “Instrument of Government & Humble Petition and Advice “. Both surprisingly liberal (in the old sense!) documents for the time.
The director should have stuck with the original speech; far more appropriate:
“It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice.
Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government.
Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.
Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess?
Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?
Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defiled this sacred place, and turned the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices?
Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance.
Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do.
I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.
Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.
In the name of God, go!”
In that movie I think Richard Harris really captured Cromwell’s personality. The movie script had Cromwell speaking often as a 1970s political liberal. But as far as political strong men go he most certainly wasn’t a Hitler, a Mussolini or even a Napoleon! The battle scenes were well done even though the historical details of the battles were laughable. The most egregious historical error was having his son Oliver die in a cavalry charge. He was a casualty of the war but he died of disease manning a fort. I guess that wasn’t heroic enough. I like the way it ended pointing that thanks to Cromwell government in England was radically changed. His statue is there at Westminster, interesting tribute to a “regicide” and a “republican”.
"You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"
Excellent clip! Thanks for posting it.
Armored cars and tanks and guns
came to take away our sons...
From Irish rebel song "The Men Behind the Wire"
I have several CDs of those songs.
I sing a couple of tunes at our pub’s Tuesday night Irish session. Haven’t done that one in a while.
One man’s hero is another man’s slaughterer of thousands of catholics. Saint Thomas More, pray for us.
*At one point, Richard Harris as Cromwell exclaims "Mr. Ireton, I was fighting for the rights of the common man when you were in knee britches!" A rather unfortunate choice of words since all the men in the scene are, in fact wearing knee britches It was the 17th century, LOL.
I was in the 9th grade when it came out. I remember going to see it with cousin & my aunt. Antonia Frasier’s book on Cromwell is a very good read on the man & the period. Well worth the effort!
As part Irish, I demand reparations from the UK parliament for the inhumane enslavement of my ancestors by the British!
And, in NI, the outrageous colonialist occupation continues!
Irish lives matter!!
(void where such sentiments are banned by rich white liberal egotist bastards)
