In a survey published late Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, nearly half of all respondents in 10 EU member states said Germany plays a more important role in the world that it did a decade ago.

“There is a sense in Europe that while German power is on the rise, French and British power is stagnant or in decline,” the center said.

The view across Europe:

… An average of 62 percent of respondents said the EU is out of touch with its citizens. A majority held this view in eight of the ten countries polled.

Only those in Germany (49 percent) and Poland (42 percent) saw the situation differently. …

Everything is relative. Roman Empire lasted 500 to 1500 years depending on what you mean by its definition. I’d say it was there to stay at the time.

It didn’t, but what happened while it was in force is still significant.

The EU is disintegrating. It will not last long.

WW1-era Germany gets a weird treatment in the impressively good Japanese anime Youjo Senki (The Saga of Tanya the Evil). Which can be watched for free, streaming.

(dubbed version)

It takes place in a parallel world Germany of that era, and the first episode is of a pitched battle. Only with the second episode is it explained how this came about.

Very good soundtrack as well. It is popular enough so that a movie continuation of the first season is coming out soon.

You kid me not. Brexit is a big joke. Limeys were throwing a fit and now have no idea what to do with it. Everyone else who have a clue laughs.

No; the opposite is happening. If they were indeed disintegrating, they would give the UK whatever they wanted in the Brexit deal, just for one example.

That’s a very pro-EU position.

You don’t need to be pro-something to see it for what it is.
If you see a crap for what it is it doesn’t mean you are pro-crap.

So it seems like EU is ‘to stay’?

Teresa May is responsible for screwing things up. She was and is a remainer. I don’t give her much longer at the helm. The Brits WILL leave the EU, you can bet on that. Sooner better than later. Once it is out the walls will start tumbling down.
I can still hear Margaret Thatcher pounding the table and shouting “I want my money back.” Several other countries want their sovereignty back too. They will soon follow.

No, but their lust for power is more evident than ever. Even temporary empires can be (and have been) lots of trouble.

Why would Russia go to war with Germany? Or Germany would go to war with Poland some on the thread are raving about. There are no reasons whatsoever.

You make a great point. It’s far past time for a Germany totally unwilling to defend the liberal values it claims to have to a NATOXIT. NATO is obsolescent and totally unwilling to reform. It’s a trans national corporate economic union and nothing more. No thanks.

Then the motivation for so-called “Brexit” is self-evident. The trouble in the UK is that the process for leaving the EU was committed into those who want to stay part of the EU.

Nope. The nation state is disintegrating. Progressive corporatist politicians have learned they can outsource totalitarianism through corporations and international organizations.

I don’t understand what appears to be a desire to allow Germany to rise further.

Blame game notwithstanding the fact it is screwed. Who is to blame is a secondary question if important at all.

Have you been to Old Blighty lately? The Brits are gone in large part. You can spend a day in parts of London and never see an Englishman. They are in the process of being colonized by their former colonies.
