Paris (AFP) - Feminist icon Gloria Steinem would not be so meek "or worried about approval" if she had her life again.
The veteran campaigner, one of the leaders of the American women's movement in the 1970s and 1980s, told AFP that she regretted being too "hesitant" about doing what she knew was right.
"I would have done lots of things differently," said the soft-spoken journalist and campaigner who was in Paris Tuesday to promote her memoirs, "My Life on the Road".
"I would have done things faster. I would have been less hesitant. I knew what I wanted to do but I was a little worried about approval, especially when there was no (women's) movement in my life," she added.
"We just need to be whoever the f*** we are and just do it," said the 84-year-old with a laugh.

Steinem is and always has been what my Jewish friends call a “ballabusta “ a ballbuster. She is the reason that there are so many aging Baby Boom women who are bitter angry revanchist and alone. They bought her shtick and are paying the price.

I did not worry about approval, and mostly did what I wanted. Except take woodshop in school; girls were not allowed to do that. And I do not hate men. My sons and husband, all of whom I do not hate, seem to be men.

My mother who was born in 1920 despised her as did her mother, one of my grandmothers, who was born in 1896. Both woman were real ladies. They made this witch look like the TRASH she was. Boiled down to the skanky essentials, Gloria Steinem sold sex. Her schtick was that career women should be free to be as promiscuous as they wanted as they aggressively pursued a career, avoiding commitments and children that might tie them down. She had a model’s good looks, passable writing skills and enough notoriety that she never lacked for money. She was able to play the aggressive sex kitten role long after most women had reached their sell-by dates. But the idea that such a rootless, irresponsible and ultimately selfish lifestyle is the route to female emancipation and fulfillment in society at large is simply wrong. As the experiences of the last generation have demonstrated.
