A. I find it nearly Impossible to believe that it had NOTHING to do with the mafia. Even if it was an insane loose cannon that did it. It has happened before.

I met a kid at a party when I was 16. Italian like me. He asked me to go for a spin with him to pick up his girl.

I went.

His idea of a good time was driving through black neighborhoods and tapping them with his car at red lights as they crossed!!

And then he wouldn’t burst out laughing.

I was in sheer terror.

But not ONE black guy did anything.

Even they know out here that it’s JUST NOT WORTH it to mess with Italians.

That’s why when that fat guy die at the hands of cops on Staten Island, they protested in Manhattan.

When my great-uncle died in L.A. my mom and I arranged for his burial in Brooklyn (Evergreens Cemetery). The funeral director was Italian—seemed to my mind very old school. He took us to a tiny restaurant where I had the best calamari I’ve ever eaten, and after the funeral gave my mom and me the best bread I’ve ever tasted in my life (and I’m not that big a bread eater). While he was driving us around, he let us know that undesirables were starting to move into his neighborhood, but that they would “be taken care of”. I had the distinct feeling that he could make people ‘disappear’. Very nice to us, but I wouldn’t want to bounce a check to him.
