KOMO News’ Special: Seattle Is Dying
Hot Air ^ | 18 Mar 2019 | John Sexton

“People didn’t use to use the word embarrassing about Seattle, but they use it a lot now,” the narrator to a new KOMO News special titled “Seattle is Dying” says. The focus of the special is homelessness and the ways in which it has changed the city.

There’s a section featuring angry residents of one area of the city who are screaming at their representatives for action. They want the tent cities managed and they’re tired of calling the police only to find out the police can arrest people but those same people will be back on the street, sometimes within hours.

As I noted last month, just 100 homeless people in Seattle were responsible for 3,500 criminal cases. This special references that story. It also asked Seattle police officers to comment anonymously on what was happening and those responses are enlightening. One officer told KOMO, “People come here because it’s called Free-attle and they believe if they come here they will get free food, free medical treatment, free mental health treatment, a free tent, free clothes and will be free of prosecution for just about everything; and they’re right.”

Looks like Seattle is becoming Haiti.

As Trump would say, “A s¥_£]hole.” That is what happens when libs get together. Maybe they will ban straws?

Though liberal voters in Seattle won’t understand the hint, their solution is as simple as “MSGA”. Not as catchy and as easily pronounceable as MAGA, but, hopefully they understand that drastic action is needed.

Why aren’t all those people out making $15/hr? Oh...that’s right! The idiots on the City Council drove all of those jobs away.

Well, they voted in the liberal politics and now they are reaping what they sowed.

Sucks to be them.

Something similar is happening in Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Sanctuary cites?

I weep for my birth city.

Seattle was once a great conservative city until the great Californication migration began in the late '70's, early '80's.

RIP

This is an incredibly well done piece. Good old fashioned journalism at its best.

If you sent sanitation workers in there to pick up what looks like trash, they would likely get accosted and accused of ‘stealing my stuff’. I am fairly libertarian on the question of letting people live their lives the way they want. But society at large has considerable investments - financial, ethical, moral, communal, public health etc - in keeping cities clean and safe. Cramming together without proper sanitation facilities is going to result in the spread of diseases like Typhus, Hepatitis and who knows what else. This cannot be permitted in a developed part of the city. Move out to the woods, and if you take the bus to town wash up first.

It is a mistake to indulge them. Let them live the way they want but cannot let them dictate the terms by which everyone else must live.

It isnt just Seattle that is dying. Washington, Oregon , and California all are in their death throes due to the influx of the “homeless” and the states governments willingness to turn a blind eye to whats happening.

Who is responsible for what has happened to these cities?

I was shocked to read in the article:

people want the tent cities managed

????

FIRST of all...GET RID OF THE TENT CITIES.

Seattle is a port city. Lots of shipping containers lying around. Build a container city for them. Get them all in one place, then start helping the ones you can.

I occupy the left coast - mostly Portland and Seattle. Yes, it’s changed a lot to the point it’s difficult to understand.

Today I heard that Oregon has banned offshore drilling and any business that would be involved with this. Recently a Bellevue, Wa (formerly conservative) local congresswoman has put out a bill to deny any presidential candidate from being on their ballot unless said candidate releases 5 years tax returns. When asked about her own returns she said she wasn’t running for president.

I worked in downtown Seattle last year and was stunned at the crazies I saw. What has happened to this country?
There was one guy who wasn’t a crazy but who was obviously informed about Seattle. He was nicely dressed, an older black guy, and told the bus driver he had just gotten in from Minnesota the night before and needed to get to the welfare office. Why our cities coddle this, invite more of them I do not know except maybe it’s job security for government workers.

We were in Olympia a couple of days ago. I went to a park in the middle of downtown across from a museum that used to be a beautiful place to take your kids for a break. It smelled like human excrement. There were male and female bums sleeping on the grass with tents, shopping carts, piles of crap and their pets. They had big plastic garbage cans everywhere to encourage the bums to throw garbage in them instead of on the ground. I am not planning a return trip anytime soon.

It used to be that Tacoma had a worse problem with bums, but we got an education a long time ago about how to handle this type of demographic. Our methods were not perfect, but we didn’t coddle them as much as these other cities do now, so they are currently not flocking to Tacoma as much as they do to other cities.

A big part of the problem are excessive government regulations on both new construction and also remodels. The permit structure from lot preparation, to hook up fees for sewer, water, electricity, and natural gas through completion and all of the nonsense associated with it add an incredible amount of expense to housing. It is almost all complete nonsense.
