President Donald Trump could save billions by eliminating a Clinton-era program that asks Americans to "Press 2 for Spanish" when seeking documents and services from the government, according to a new report.
“The government must stop placing this onerous and costly translation and interpretation burden on Americans, and President [Donald] Trump has the ability to do so on a speedy basis via a new executive order,” Stephen Guschov, executive director of ProEnglish, an organization advocating for English as the United States' official language, told The Washington Times.
President Bill Clinton began the program in August 2000 with an executive order, requiring that federal agencies implement a system to allow people with limited English-speaking skills to access services.
During President George W. Bush's first term, the Office of Management and Budget set the cost of the service at $2 billion annually, meaning that some $30 billion has been spent if the price hasn't changed.

I totally agree with your statement.
It boggles my mind when I do my weekly grocery shopping in a Baltimore suburban county that English is a second, if not perhaps the third language.
Moreover, I gather that more and more school districts now have a majority of students who speak various other tongues while knowing little if any English.
And get rid of all the thousands of court interpreters the taxpayers are forced to pay for. Let the defendants pay for their own interpreters.

We used to go back and forth over the border years ago (Northern NY), never checking in with Customs on either side. Never needed to. They were our family and neighbors.
Now...all those roads are broken, and the border is like the DMZ
It would be very easy for the pphone companies to append a language specifier to our callerID. Then every site we called would know to respond in English. No need for the Press 1 bs.
Meanwhile, I note that many sites start out in Spanish, so we have to know what Depressa Dos means. How long before the messages start out in Arabic?

Yeah, that’s a great idea. I get sick of having to waste my time waiting for the prompt “Press 1 for English”. Hey, in case you bank or other idiots have forgotten, this is MY country. You wanna live here, learn the language! Why should I be inconvenienced by your needs, which should have been corrected when you got here? Similarly, we have to leaf through instruction manuals, labels, etc. to find the English part.
Notice that this executive order was issued by Clinton near the end of his administration. He knew it wasn’t a good idea to do this when he still needed to use his clout with Congress. I don’t think this helped Al Gore in November 2000.

This is one of those things that is better done quietly. Just do it and notify nobody. One day...it’s just gone.
The same with the stupid sign language interpreters. If you can use common English, you shouldn’t get special services.

I looked it up. There are 32 different languages available! So why should any immigrant - legal or not - bother to learn English?
