Attorney General David Parker had told a crowd at a vigil Saturday that a key part of the government's response was to ban semi-automatic weapons, a step further than Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had called for in the wake of the attacks.
But Parker told Radio New Zealand on Saturday that the government has yet to make any decision on what changes to gun ownership policies, if any, would look like.
"We need to ban some semi-automatics, perhaps all of them. Those decisions have yet to be taken, but the prime minister has signaled that we are going to look at that issue.".... as it stands now we have no idea who's buying weapons and where they're keeping them or how many they have in New Zealand.
The minimum legal age to own a firearm in New Zealand is 16, and there is currently no national register of gun owners. All gun owners must be licensed to own and operate a firearm and must pass a background check of criminal and medical records. Registering a purchased firearm, however, is not required in New Zealand.
The guns used in the mosque massacres were obtained legally.

Theres omly, one thing that needs to be banned from all countries desiring to be safer, and it isnt guns.
Its godam muslims.
Personally I don't care for a SA rifle...but lot's of people do.
I'd guess the MP or whatever he is...got blow back from some of the hunting outfits...there...Maybe even other sane Kiwi's...
Give a Pol...a supposed crisis/event..and they will jerk wad it.
And New Zealand needs to figure out why their police reportedly took 17 minutes to respond! That is the discussion that needs to be front and center.
Glad to see this turn of events.
Man, that was a lousy call up front.
(Pssst.... it wasn't the Muslims doing the killing this time, they were doing the dying. Just a little FYI)
Politicians...would be my first choice....
Each to his/her own....
Isn’t it wonderful how “their betters” in NZ can make these decisions without the citizens say so! The Second Amendment, is a barrier to this kind of action here, but we need to get a Conservative Majority SCOTUS to make a final ruling on just what the 2A really says. And with Roberts we don’t yet have a Conservative Court to offer that ruling. Ruthie needs to go, and having Breyer follow would be the icing on the cake. We should hope and pray that Trump gets at least one more appointment before the 2020 Election just in case we loose the Senate then. Getting replacements for Thomas and Alito should also be on the list in Trump’s second term.
All the honest gun owners in a fit of guilt will line up to turn in their weapons.
I watched the video, and didn’t look like he killed 50 peeps to me..
I know. They all need to go back to muslim countries.
Glad to hear they’re backing down on this.
FWIW any gun control they impose will just be a win for the terrorist.
The whole incident was weird. His manifesto was riddled with memes, inside jokes, and sarcasm.
The NZ army furnished an artillery unit in RVN while I was there. Really great lads! I can’t see them turning in their
SA rifles without a fight!
Marxists and their fool toadies are in charge of the NZ government, again.
Someone should investigate them. Might find some interesting “stuff” about their connections in “politics”.
The New Zealander’s need to pass a law forbidding Australians to visit NZ and bringing guns with them.
The idiot libs who advocate semi-automatic gun bans don’t know what they are. Most of them are so ignorant they think semi-autos are full auto.
The globalists, statists and leftists were certainly ready to move quickly after this most recent event, weren’t they?
The policy making pols certainly do, and they will use whatever crisis they can to take away firearms piecemeal until they are the only ones who have them ...
