New Zealand authorities have reminded citizens that they face up to 10 years in prison for “knowingly” possessing a copy of the New Zealand mosque shooting video – and up to 14 years in prison for sharing it. Corporations (such as web hosts) face an additional $200,000 ($137,000 US) fine under the same law.
Terrorist Brenton Tarrant used Facebook Live to broadcast the first 17 minutes of his attack on the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Friday – the first of two mosque attacks which left 50 dead and 50 injured.

Copies of Tarrant’s livestream, along with his lengthy manifesto, began to rapidly circulate on various file hosting sites following the attack, which as we noted Friday – were quickly scrubbed from mainstream platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Scribd. YouTube has gone so far as to intentionally disable search filters so that people cannot find Christchurch shooting materials – including footage of suspected multiple shooters as well as the arrest of Tarrant and other suspects.
On Saturday, journalist Nick Monroe reported that New Zealand police have warned citizens that they face imprisonment for distributing the video, while popular New Zealand Facebook group Wellington Live notes that “NZ police would like to remind the public that it is an offence to share an objectional publication which includes the horrific video from yesterday’s attack. If you see this video, report it immediately. Do not download it. Do not share it. If you are found to have a copy of the video or to have shared it, you face fines & potential imprisonment.”

My Heritage Economic Freedom index had New Zealand at the third most free country economically on the planet. Looks like their grading criteria is suspect.
They can’t possibly prevent people who want to see it from seeing it, and still they go all-in heavy-handed. Almost like they got something to hide.

My son tried to send me the video on the phone and got a message that warned him about a similar fine here in Australia. I know they have laws in place that can get you in court for sharing intimate videos of an ex to other people etc. but nothing like this had come up before. I don’t particularly want to watch the whole thing but cant believe that beheadings etc can be shown online but this cannot and that we have an s automated system for stopping it stinks to high heaven

Well, since there’s no evidence it actually occurred, I guess it didn’t happen.
Political leaders and public figures were falling over themselves this weekend to condemn the mosque attacks in New Zealand, while dozens of Christians were slaughtered by Muslims in Nigeria to the sound of crickets
There are people who want to use this shooter and this event for their political ends. The video is irrelevant to that and may even harm the narrative.
In their eyes, if 50 dead Muslims get them gun control, that was a good use of dead Muslims. If they could get 500 Muslims killed, that would be even better for them. Yeah, I said that because that’s the way they see it. If this guy was a Muslim and had blown up the mosques and never used a gun, those dead Muslims would have been useless and wasted in their eyes.
The only reason this is a major story is because a white man is involved. That’s the way white people think. That’s why kidnapped or missing black kids never make the news, only white children.
