Beto O'Rourke acknowledges 'privileges' afforded to him because of race and gender
On an Iowa presidential campaign swing, O'Rourke praised the diversity of the large Democratic field.

WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke said that he’s been afforded “privileges” in his life because of his race and gender but insisted that his presidential bid can be used as a way to level the playing field for all Americans.
“As a white man who has had privileges that others could not depend on, or take for granted, I've clearly had advantages over the course of my life,” O’Rourke told "Meet the Press" moderator Chuck Todd during a campaign swing through Iowa on Saturday.
“I think recognizing that and understanding that others have not — doing everything I can to ensure that there is opportunity and the possibility for advancement and advantage for everyone — is a big part of this campaign and a big part of the people who comprise this campaign.”
O'Rourke, a Democrat from Texas, addressed the question in light of some criticism that he has benefited from a double standard in the early days of campaigning, given the large amount of attention his entry into the crowded field has received.
The former congressman went on to praise his fellow Democratic presidential hopefuls as part of the “best field that we've ever seen in the nominating process,” calling the “diversity of background, and experience, expertise” a key asset for Democrats.

All privilege flows from wealth or is earned through accomplishment. Profiling has nothing to do with privilege, but from past behavior. If you are walking your dog, you react differently if a black lab is approaching than a pit bull. Even Jessie Jackson understands this. Profiling is also far more about how you dress than pigmentation. Cops, lawyers, priests, and other people in respected positions immediately change their profile when they put on a 3-patch jacket, bandanna and leathers and jump on their Harleys with a few buddies.
Bobby O certainly had advantages, like his Dad buying him a seat in Congress.

I’d like someone to ask him if he thinks Cory Booker is competent and able to do the job. If he says “yes”, then why is Beto running against a competent black man? Is Beto hiding the fact that he actually thinks that Cory Booker and Kamala Harris are incompetent? If he thought they were competent, he wouldn’t try to horn in on their show.

He didn’t get privilege from being white. He got it from being a rich kid.
I took a white man to church today that had spent 20+ years in prison for selling a small amount of pot. Was caught with drugs later in life so he served more time. He is white but was not from a wealthy family like privileged Beto. Otherwise, he’d got off much easier.
That may be the worst thing I’ve ever heard.

Actually his privileges are due to marrying a woman who inherited a bunch of cash. It has nothing to do with race.
