At least 50 people have been killed by flash floods in Indonesias eastern Papua province.
The floods in Sentani, near the provincial capital of Jayapura, were triggered by torrential rain and subsequent landslides on Saturday, and also left 59 people injured.
Dozens of homes were damaged by floodwaters, the national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
The number of casualties and impact of the disaster will likely increase as search and rescue teams are still trying to reach other affected areas.
The waters had receded but officials were still trying to evacuate people.
The joint search and rescue teams are still doing evacuations and not all affected areas have been reached because of fallen trees, rocks, mud and other material, Nugroho said.
I'll try to snag some pictures and put them up. The damage is horrific. Some 83 or more people have lost their lives. At least 400 have taken shelter at the ex-patriat school which is on a hill. The school and other mission personnel are providing clothing, food, medical care and other necessities while those living there regroup. There are a other mission organizations who are providing some care, also.
But, apparently, it is overwhelming.

This plane belongs to the Seventh Day Adventist group in Sentani. They fly people, medicines, and supplies to interior locations. This damage will hurt some of the poorest on earth for many, many days.
These people are just some who have sheltered in our school's gym. Our school, btw, is a Christian school. Learn more at Hillcrest School

Some of the dead.
My prayers to those people !
Thank you. Pray especially for stamina for those ministering to the hurting. Pray for supplies to be able to reach people in the coming days. Bridges were washed out and streets are now non-existent. But pray especially, that hearts of the majority religion would be turned to the need of a personal God who shows forgiveness and that they can know the One Way to heaven.
My friends now tell me that it is raining heavily, again, in Sentani. Please pray it stops.
It seems no one is listening, but I’ll keep trying to get attention to this. I just heard this from someone over there:
“Please keep praying for Sentani. As I talk to my family and some dear friends over there they say the rains have started up again, pouring and flooding houses again. There’s neighbors on roofs afraid of getting swept away and they can hear walls breaking. Please pray for the rains to stop and for all the terrified people who have already gone through so much lose already just see it happen again before they get a breath.”
And now, about two hours ago, a 4.1 earthquake is affecting the buildings who are now on very shaky foundations.

Just sayin'...
And that affects the flooding how? Or, mitigates the fact of 83 people dead? They did not migrate here recently, but thousands of years ago.
We should be less compassionate because of geography?
RIP.
Prayers up for the people of Sentani.
Thank you so much. I’ve been seeing pictures of what has happened. It is hard to believe that places I’ve known since ‘95 have so utterly changed in just one night of rain.
Our high school students go into the interior of Papua for a two week intensive time of service, anthropology studies, and ministry. It is rather taxing on them. They had just returned on Friday. On Saturday, the rains came. Many of these same very, very tired kids get up early and stay up late helping to cook and serve people who have evacuated to our school’s gyms for safety.
As of last night, it was still raining.
