{British}Parliament votes against a no-deal Brexit
The Economist ^ | 13 March 2019 | Economist

THE SYMBOLISM was painful. Facing the reality of another lost vote in the Commons on March 12th, Theresa May lost her voice too. The prime minister croaked that, now MPs had decisively rejected her Brexit deal for a second time, by 149 votes, they faced “unenviable choices”. But the truth is that, along with her voice, she has lost control of the Brexit process.

That was brought home on the evening of March 13th when MPs voted once more against the alternative of leaving the European Union with no deal, on a motion proposed by a cross-party group of backbenchers not the government. This motion does not in itself eliminate the risk of a no-deal Brexit, since in both British and EU law it remains the default course in the absence of a withdrawal agreement. But it does mean that MPs have rejected not just Mrs May’s Brexit plan but also her old mantra that no deal is better than a bad deal.

Looking at the EU, unless Merkel/Germany gets into this debate rather quickly....the 29th will come and the EU will lead them out of the organization. There won’t be an extension.

However, of the various members in the EU affected by this, I would suggest that Germany is seriously affected. It wouldn’t surprise me if BMW and Mercedes both put a quarter of their employees on some 30 to 45 day ‘holiday’ because they can’t market/sell their cars in the UK this year. That type of slow-down would bring on a recession in Germany.

So I think there is increasing pressure on Merkel to force the EU to find some extension and offer a couple of improvements to the deal.

If they have to stick around past 29 March, the UK needs to go full guerilla warfare within the halls of the European Parliament. The British are too well mannered. Make the EU want to be rid of them. Create a “Ransom of Red Chief” scenario.

you are correct. 7% of German exports head to the UK and 3,6% of their imports are from the UK

For Mercedes Benz the UK is the #4 market. But they still have a huge market in China. Remember that even if Brexit happens, then MB can ship their cars to the UK. The only difference would be a higher tariff and thereby higher sticker price.

European (including British) companies have put in plans for hard brexit

There can only be an extension until May because in May there is the European parliament elections. The UK needs to leave by then or stay on for another 5 years.

What are you talking about? The EU is not the one asking for the extension. The UK is begging to stay a little bit longer

The EU's deal with the UK was simple:

  1. March 29 you leave but you get 1 year to hammer out a trade deal with the EU. During that time you, the UK, get all the benefits of the common market. As you get all the benefits you have to pay the same amount (and get the same rebates) and you have all the benefits

  2. The NI-RoI border remains soft i.e. non-existent

that's a good deal considering the UK had no idea what it wanted. now the EU is perfectly happy for the UK to leave March 29. But the UK hasn't made up its mind yet.

No Deal Brexit would be fine

Leave, and let the chips fall where they may

It will be a huge benefit for the UK. Its a major economy, and world capital is always looking for differentiated, new, free locations to go.

There are “squishes” amongst the Brit Uniparty who represent pro-Brexit voters but who, themselves, favor staying in the EU. IMHO, they are trying to kill Brexit by voting against, and thus not allowing, a hard Brexit. With no “hard” Brexit possible then it just requires the EU and it’s British allies to simply refuse to negotiate an acceptable “negotiated” Brexit. They hope that Brexit would then die a slow “natural” death.

This will never happen, IMHO. There are entirely too many British Quislings who want to keep the British people living under the rule of Brussels.

Out means OUT.

If Britain is out and Ireland is in then there needs to be a border. Simple. “Good Friday” was simply Blair appeasing the IRA when they refused to allow inspectors to keep them honest in disarmament. It was shameful to see. Trouble is, there’s no conservative party in UK now, just varying shades of pink.

You are the guy that thinks the POTENTIAL tariff on a box of nuts and washers is more important than A NATIONS SOVEREIGNTY. You are a small minded nit.

The wants needs and desires of global corporations SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH A HUGE DECISION LIKE BECOMING A SOVEREIGN NATION! How small minded can it get?

yes, the UK should have a no-deal Brexit. But however the UK parliament just ruled it out.

World capital is moving away from London as without a bank passporting deal, London has much less to offer. So I work with BoFa, Amex, JPMC and other banks who are shifting operations to Dublin,Warsaw, Bucharest, Frankfurt and even Paris.

“yeah, whatever the people decided, who cares. We rule!! Deep State, UK”

The people of the U.K. are not sovereign and they have a very limited role in the government.

That would probably happen. If no Brexit by May then no Brexit until 2024 since European parliamentary elections are in May

But they have no constitutional role.

Yet the "out" they asked for was out of one of the 4 freedoms (goods, services, capital and people). That's not possible. It's out of all or nothing.

The Good Friday agreement was and is binding.

The simpler solution would be to let Ireland reunite, let Scotland gets it's freedom and England+Wales to leave the EU completely

Wake up. There was a referendum. It was in all the papers. I guess you don’t like Bexit.

The Good Friday agreement was and is binding.

A core part of the Good Friday Agreement is that there is no physical border, no impediment to the flow of goods or people, between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

If the UK, or at least Northern Ireland, does not remain in the EU Free Trade Area and have full freedom of movement of people, this is not possible. Brexiteers keep claiming that it is possible, but they are simply in denial.

The UK and Ireland both agreed the Good Friday Agreement including its provisions that the border be open, that there be free access between Ireland and NI and that people in NI can be both British and Irish and choose to use either or both citizenships and identify as such.,p>The Republic of Ireland has (just like all other EU member states) a veto on any Brexit deal and has made the border remaining fully open a condition of any deal.
