But one proposal belongs in a different category because it would seek to address the gravest injustice in American history. I'm talking about reparations for African-American descendants of slaves.

Perhaps — if we could know that demands for reparations would be limited to the descendants of slaves. But we can know no such thing. On the contrary, the dynamic of grievance politics in the United States tells us that reparations for African Americans would only be the start.

Weve already paid too much reparations — it’s called “welfare” and “anti-white racial quotas”.
How would such a scheme be remotely constitutional?
Ex post facto laws are prohibited. Reparations seek to recover damages for what once was a lawful activity.
Bills of attainder and corruption of blood laws are also unconstitutional. You cannot punish the current generation for what their ancestors did.
The Emancipation Proclamation was promulgated in 1862. The XIII Amendment was ratified in 1865.
What are these people talking about?
During the Reagan administration Japanese-Americans interned by FDR were compensated.

My great grandmother was the daughter of an indentured servant who was raped by a member of her employer’s family. My great grandmother was born in a Catholic convent and abandoned by her mother. All she knew about her father was that his last name was Whitney. Where the **** are my reparations? The author is right, if we open this can of worms, where will it end? This is heading towards reparations for all Mexicans as well as Central and South Americans who were deported after entering the country illegally.
Let me start by stating that I realize the current leftist dogma is that all white people are evil and the root cause of 100% of the world’s problems.
But what about northern families who lost family members in the Civil War? Are they exempt? Do they also get reparations?
Current revisionist history says the Civil War was all about slavery, and nothing else.

Slavery had ended by then.
I have not had a slave and today’s blacks have not picked cotton as a slave, no payment necessary.
Because they were still alive. Damages were paid to those directly affected. There is no one alive today that was a slave in 19th Century CSA.
It is just another ploy to transfer money from producers to non-producers.
