MARTA Sales Tax

VOTE “YES” Early Voting: NOW Election Day: MARCH 19th Traffic is terrible and ONLY TRANSIT BEATS TRAFFIC. For years, Gwinnett County has needed comprehensive transportation solutions. THE TIME IS NOW to support the plan that thousands of Gwinnett residents have helped shape through an extensive public participation process.

It may be another 10-20 years before your voice and your vote can be heard on this issue.

one_cent.png

A ONE CENT tax gets paid directly to Gwinnett County from the State This is not a property tax increase. As a one penny sales tax, even people from outside of Gwinnett who shop or do business here will help support our future transportation needs. (about 30% of the total funds will come from outsiders)

It’s estimated to be over 5.5 billion dollars over the next 30 years that will be funded with help from visitors to Gwinnett.

LIARS!!

IT IS NOT A PENNY TAX IT IS A 5.5 BILLION DOLLAR TAX

It will NOT increase property values It will DECREASE property values. It will not ease traffic congestion it will do nothing but take money out of the pockets of hard working citizens and put it in the pockets of MARTA contractors and employees.

It will cost the average family in Gwinnett from $300 - $600 per year - so if you don’t use MARTA (and why would you?) it’s just money out of your pocket for nothing - like most taxes.

Why will MARTA decrease property values? People need to get to and from work.

Not totally unrelated.

Dated a gal way back who had some $$ and was willing to pay for lots of things and buy me lots of things.

I said no at first, then said you can pick up the dinner tab, then said sure you can buy me this. Then that.

Within a short time I couldn’t believe what a moocher I had turned into.

I was much younger and it didn’t last. I didn’t like what I was becoming.

But when you give people the power to take and take and take and take...

Besides the unusual one here and there, they will.

And it’s surprising how easy it is to justify every time you take in your head soon enough.

Shouldn’t the users of mass transit pay for it? In every city I have been in, except for the commuter buses during commute times, all the other buses circulating all day and evening are 95% empty.

So more tax money is required to pay for an expanded transit system that already relies on the taxpayers, doesn't pay it's own way, and likely doesn't go where the riders (mythical?) want or need to go. Not familiar with MARTA per se, but the above statement is applicable to every light rail and public transit system I've ever seen.

Are you from there? If not, for those of us that live in the Atlanta metro area, MARTA ain’t good. Not any day of the week.

MARTA becomes a transport system for less than desirable people to spread out from the war zones in the inner city to the areas around the stations. It because a way to meet people with whom you would not otherwise associate. Bums ride it continually in the winter to keep warm and they don't get off the train to defecate or urinate. I guarantee you that unless you own section 8 apartments ,your property in the vicinity of a MARTA station will NOT increase in value.

People need to get to work, but MARTA is a crappy way to do it. It is a radial rail system that leaves large areas unserviced. I tried using it for 2 years and it took on average twice as long as driving and that was for a work location immediately adjacent to a rail stop.

Absolutely, but that isn't the business model MARTA follows. It is a taxpayer funded boondoggle to suck up tax dollars and provide some transportation to people who don't pay for it (there is a fare, but about 1/10th of the actual cost)

Yes, they do. But some people use mass transit, especially light rail, to enable them to get to and from areas where they do things that do lower property values. Malls near transit stops do not increase in value. And the transit system must put stops near malls, otherwise they’re racist.

If I’m not mistaken Portland was supposed to have all the answers and usher in a new era of mass transit where cars weren’t needed.

Well.... Portland’s Transit Experiment Has Failed http://ti.org/antiplanner/?p=13719

http://www.governing.com/topics/transportation-infrastructure/gov-portland-oregon-struggles-to-remain-leader-in-public-transit.html

It’s funny to see just how much searches on the internet are biased. I’ve read, more than once that Portland’s master plan is an utter failure. But, when you do a search, not much shows up.

Anywho, MARTA to Gwinnett Cty, via a Penny Tax, sucks. Gwinnett is becoming besieged by a very violent hispanic gang problem. Gwinnett elected some Dem’s for the first time in a long time. Not your old school, Southern Blue Dogs. Liberal, AOC type Dem’s. Dark days ahead for Gwinnett.

I do love when pro-tax people call it a “penny.” Gee whiz, I guess I can affurd a penny!

If you want to help Atlanta traffic, build an interstate route between Montgomery, AL and Tallahassee, FL so that the whole midwest doesn’t have to driver through downtown Atlanta to get to Florida.

I live in Gwinnett County. I was on the fence on this one. I have some rental property in the county and I thought this might help tenants. When the Super Bowl was coming to town, the MARTA drivers figured it would be a good time to be out sick. It has always been a bit of a jobs program. We don’t need to be held hostage to these clowns. I’m voting no.

I live in Gwinnett also and there was never any doubt in my mind that this would be just another grab into my funds for absolutely NO benefit to me. I dutifully tried using marta for two years and it took twice as long as driving exposed me to all sorts of disgusting things (pop bottles full of urine rolling around the floor, human feces on the seats, and aggressive panhandlers getting in your face.) Not to mention a couple of Hispanic a$$holes that wanted to cause trouble with me until I convinced them it would not be a good idea.

I and Mrs. Repeal put two votes in the “NO” column today.
I am not “anti-Marta”; I am “anti-tax”.
They can put their trains and buses where ever they want to,
but I won’t be riding them, so I don’t want to pay for them.

I spoke out about this issue early on and was quoted in several newspaper articles and I did a couple of radio interviews.

Shortly after this I lost my contract job that I had for the past 4 and half years. I would have a hard time fighting the issue, but was warned by several headhunters to keep a low profile and not to get my name in the news anymore.
