How Trump would cut Medicare by $818B in a decade
Washington Examiner ^ | 03/11/19

President Trump's proposed budget released Monday appeared to call on Congress to cut $818 billion from Medicare over 10 years, despite a long-standing promise from the president that he wouldn't touch the popular program.

The budget does not outline specific cuts to Medicare, nor does it propose a cost-saving plan along the lines of an idea from former House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to give beneficiaries subsidies to buy private coverage. Instead, the budget envisions spending reductions through Congress passing prescription-drug legislation and through efforts to reduce improper payments to healthcare providers.

"He's not cutting Medicare in this budget," Russell Vought, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, said at a White House press briefing Monday. "What we are doing is putting forward reforms that lower drug prices, that, because Medicare pays a very large share of drug prices in this country, has the impact of finding savings. We are also fighting waste, fraud, and abuse."

By reviewing, and eliminating the large number of individuals placed on Social Security Disability during Obama’s 8 years. That would be one place to start.

Damn straight. At 60.99 years old, I became a T12 paraplegic. You’d think qualifying for SSDI would be a slam dunk, but no. Long story short, I was finally approved.

Then I find out about all the layabouts that got on it using a social worker to do all the paperwork and coach them about having one of the various maladies that are impossible to disprove, like “I have TERRIBLE fibromyalgia!”

If it would weed out the fakers, I’d go through the approvals process all over again.

Every president in the last 60 years has promised to cut waste, fraud, and abuse. Wake me when one does.

Folks paid for their Medicare. Those on Medicaid don’t. Take the money from Medicaid.

We have never had a president like this one. He won’t sweep it under the rug but will do his best.

I’m not saying there are not fakers in the system. But currently 4.8% of Americans are on either Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income. The two federal disability programs. I don’t think that is an outrageous number, especially considering all the advances in medicine that allow people to survive really horrible disease and accidents. Having survived doesn’t mean they can work though.

Even if we could find all the fakers I don’t think it is going to save a whole bunch of money.

“Even if we could find all the fakers I don’t think it is going to save a whole bunch of money. “

Easily over a billion a month.

I have an unnamed relative that went on ssdi after her motherinlaw nurse coached her.

$1300 a month for her and her daughter. Works part time and parties full time while living with her father.

This is from 2012. Who knows how many more were added during Obama's second term:

Social Security Disability Increased by 5.4 Million Under Obama

Easily over a billion a month

A nice savings, but...the Fed gov't alone currently borrows $3 Billion per DAY.

I’m not saying it hasn’t increased, I know it has. Have a friend I served with who retired about the same time I did. He got a job at Social Security as a SSI claims rep. Before he started we were talking and saying the toughtest part will be putting up with all the fakers. We both thought about 80%-90% of people who filed were faking it. After he worked there a couple years he said he had the numbers reversed. That only 10%-20% are faking it, the rest have something seriously wrong with them.

I just don’t think 4.8% is an unreasonable number of people that are too disabled to work. That works out to about 17.8 million people. Even if 30% of that 4.8% are fakers and we catch them it’s not going to save a lot of money. Probably wouldn’t save the amount we would have to spend to find them.

Thanks. Now I don’t have to worry about the fraud and corruption.

From what I understand, people who have been approved for disability, unless they are old enough to be rolled over into regular Social Security, they are required to have their cases reviewed periodically. When I spoke to a rep who worked for Social Security Disability, he claimed that they were seriously behind in reviewing existing cases.

There’s an SSDI website that has the stats. A lot of disability claims are terminated every year.

1300 dollars? Even if she lives with her father, that’s not much at all. I couldn’t even imagine trying to survive on that even with free lodging. I make 8200 a month so take out my mortgage of 906 a month. Add HOA, property taxes, insurance another 1,000 a month. That’s 6200 dollars a month to keep the family of 6 going. It’s not easy. 1300 dollars would be devestating. I don’t know how people make it on such low wages or welfare. Hopefully I’ll never have to find out. Must be an awful existence.
