DENVER -- A foundation is focused on driving clunkers off the road in hopes of ushering in cleaner air in Colorado.
The Colorado Automobile Dealers Association started the Clear the Air Foundation in 2007. It's focused on cars that are more than 15 years old. Mark Zeigler, the Director of the foundation, said it's focused on these cars because they emit 100 times the pollution of new cars.
Since it's inception, the foundation has pulled 4,000 clunkers off Colorado streets, with the goal of removing 650 cars a year.
The foundation takes clunkers from dealerships for free and sells the cars to scrap yards. Money from the scrap yard sale is pooled into a scholarship fund and then awarded to aspiring technicians. The scholarship awards go to both education and new tools.
"As these young men and women are starting in a new career, it makes a huge impact to have tools to start with instead of borrowing," said Zeigler.
This year, the foundation hopes to distribute $100,000 in scholarship money to new aspiring technicians.
War on the poor. When they cannot afford the payment they are left without a way to work.
I wish the state would replace the emissions program with something like this. It is dumb to check tens of thousands of modern vehicles that don’t pollute.
That will increase the prices for used vehicles with larger seating capacity. Large family, moderate income? Too bad!
Creating ‘poor people’.......It’s what the Democrats do best!...................The only thing they do any good at...................
You’ve obviously never seen Mexicans get out of a vehicle...................
That is the purpose...................
O.G.N.T.S.A.
Progressive, elitist snobbery at work.
I wish that people who desire to remove the only cars affordable to the poor would have their own cars crushed, and then be blacklisted from owning one.
The people who demand socialism to get free stuff are no where near as filthy as the people who want socialism to deprive others.
BS, There's no such thing as a free lunch, someone is paying somewhere for this and pockets are somehow being lined.
A big selling point for Subaru in Colorado is how long they last. This is going to be a big problem for many Jeep owners too.
It’s their money...........................
The dealership gets a tax deduction.......................at BOOK VALUE.......................
And no, it is not polluting the Earth.
Years ago I worked the summer months up/near at
Greeley, CO. They had a (nearby) Turkey Farm that made the air nearly un-breathable in the early morning hours. The same goes for the meat packing company near Longmont. Bad.
Years ago I worked the summer months near a Maxwell House Coffee Plant, a bakery and a Cigar Factory...............The smell was divine...............
:I drive a 15 year old car - a 2004 GMC Yukon.
And no, it is not polluting the Earth. “
2006 Corolla here—and I don’t care if it is polluting!:-)
.
They could use the cars as teaching aids for those students and then give the cars to needy people ... but instead they shred the cars to take them out of the market
