Venezuela's blackout hell is scheduled for extension

The horrific blackout that has engulfed all of Venezuela is not going away any time soon. Today is day four, and there will be more.

New York Times has a good reporter on the case, Anatoly Kurmanaev, and he got pretty close to the bottom of it. He writes:

I went to the heart of Venezuela's transmission system in Guarico to try to find out what's going on with the grid. Here's why partial blackouts are unfortunately likely to persist for a while. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

"They voted in Chavez and all his marxist promises."

Chavez got in because that election was the first nation wide use of computerized paperless balloting. The machines were provided by a company that Chavez had a large interest in.

Unfortunately for the Venezuelans, they chose this 20 years ago.

At some point, they are going to have to choose for themselves whether their lives are more or less valuable than their liberty.

Were the USA to do...(insert your choice) the Venezuelans would have learned nothing. Other than Uncle Sugar will step in to make it all better again. Then in 20 more years we’ll be treated to Yankque go home, death to America et.al.

The best course of action is let South America fix this. It’s their problem....not ours.

“Anyone know if homes and apartments are still getting water through a public water system or has that failed already?”
No power no water. Any municiple water supply system would require electricity to deliver water. Bomba de agua (water pump)
What a nice place!/S

I think once Maduro falls from power, we're going to find a horrible death toll from famine. It could be just as bad on a per-person basis as the Great Leap Forward famine that may have killed as many as 45 million Chinese between 1958 and 1963.

Exactly. Just as we will learn that the death toll in this blackout is already in the hundreds, not the handful currently being reported.

North Korea is somewhat similar. I wonder what these countries have in common?

Both have small carbon footprints and are leading the way in fighting climate change.

But they still have free health care!

We will soon have updated stories of SHTF.

Actually, I would like to see US take in some VZ refugees. Perhaps the ones that have ardently fought socialism and want to see that it doesn’t re-emerge.

Some of these people could be great witnesses to the curse of socialism (especially during this election cycle). Remember the refugees from Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Cuba that came to the US were for the most part strong anti-communists.

This would be akin to taking in Christians persecuted in Muslim countries.

This is America’s future if AOC and her ideas gain traction.

YES. And at the highest levels, the communist democRATs know this and fully intend it.

this appears to be a good explanation of what caused the blackout, and the prognosis for restoring power in the future looks grim:

Looks like the end condition in “Atlas Shrugged” ...

Yes, I have every confidence that they are the best people to get it right. With them at the helm, there’s no way this could happen in the U.S.

The greatest proponents of liberty, freedom, and capitalism that I’ve met here in the U.S. are refugees from the communists in Viet Nam.

Aren't they going to help us with water? With food?

Plenty of people are trying, but they're getting turned back at the border. That's the principal problem when your government makes it their exclusive business to distribute everything. They can also fail to distribute anything. Stalin found it most useful.

Catnipman posted this article that goes into detail and paints a pretty grim picture. If the main generators are permanently damaged, darkness is the new normal for Venezuela for the foreseeable future. We won't need any YooToob prepper speculation to find out what a SHTF scenario looks like, we just need to watch the real thing.
