AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro isn’t ruling out direct payments to African-Americans for the legacy of slavery – a stand separating him from his 2020 rivals.
“If under the Constitution we compensate people because we take their property, why wouldn’t you compensate people who actually were property,” the former Obama-era housing secretary and ex-San Antonio mayor said on Sunday.
Castro was among the last of a pack of 2020 candidates to speak at the South by Southwest Festival in Texas, in what amounted to one of the biggest gatherings of the Democratic field yet.

Germans suffered more recent slavery,
so they are first in line for reparations.

The democrat party should pay reparations. They were and are the party of slavery. The Republicans freed the slaves and gave them the rights that they now enjoy.
Then the kids of 1990s Nigerian immigrants will get money from the grandkids of 1920s European immigrants ... in the name of fairness.

Someone should ask this jerk about payments to all of us who lost family members fighting to free the slaves.
Tell him to sue the Confederacy for the money, then print a large sum of Confederate money to pay out.

It was always illegal to enslave someone in the United States, from its founding.
After the USA came into existence, new slaves were either born to existing slaves, or purchased from outside the country. 20 years after the Constitution of the United States went into effect, slaves could no longer be legally imported. So no one was ever enslaved (had their previous liberty taken from them) under the auspices of the USA.
Also, one alive in the United States would have standing to sue.
New Deal and Great Society social welfare programs, and public education, constitute almost a century of reparation for any residual economic effects.
I agree. And tax all the living slave owners at 99% to cover it.

Beat me to it...the only slaves in our country today are either slaves of the illegals the Dems love so much or of the Dem Party which has enslaved generations.
If he gave it to every relative of a slave in America he’d be talking a bunch of money.
If he gave it to every descendant of a slave down in the Caribbean or South America, he might be out $2,000.

By his logic, the only parties that should be compensated are the descendants of the slave owners. It was their ancestors’ property that was confiscated by the government.

If course some of them do! They figure that IF they can get enough black people fired up, thinking of all that money they're gonna get IF this certain candidate gets elected, then they blacks will turn out in droves on Election Day to elect them!
Too bad that they seem to have forgotten about all of US who will turn out in droves to make sure that candidate DOESN'T get elected.
(Not to mention the sheer idiocy of those who actually believe the candidate will actually KEEP their promise and fork over the money.)
