What would I urge? Hard Brexit. If the EU wants to erect a hard border in the Republic of Ireland - and pay for it - in the teeth of fierce opposition from the Irish who do not want that, and if they want to pay for manning that border, let em!
As a political reality, I dont think they can do it. I think theyre just posturing and that this is part of Project Fear 2.0. Hell, the EU cant even defend its borders from the millions of military age males pouring in from 3rd world shitholes in Africa and the Middle East......but theyre going to erect a hard border in Ireland and pay for its upkeep? Dont make me laugh.
The EU wants the conditions of the Good Friday agreement to be upheld, namely that there is a soft border
the UK wants the hard border to stop EU citizens from coming into the UK.
Remember that the referendum was about keeping EU citizens out of the UK’s workforce
The Irish and the EU want to keep the border open - because that is one of the terms of the Good Friday agreement, signed in the 1990s and what ended the troubles
But the UK wants a hard border - because that's what Brexit is about.
